I Am Going To New York City!
I have been before (about 10 years ago)and I am so excited to be returning. Does anyone have any suggestions for places to see and places to eat that are off the tourist trap path? I just wanted to share with everyone. My husband surprised me this evening with the news. Its a business trip for him...but I get to go and stay in a beautiful room in Times Square. Woo-Hoo! Ok...happy babbling over. :)

10. I had a friend, who is now no longer with us,
who had that happen to him on a couple of occasions as well.

It's an interesting place. Kind of fun measuring the dust on the chicken bones hanging on the light fixtures. Haven't been there in years though. Wife, kids, etc. Ah, the old days. :(

22. I was kicked outta there many a time in my youth!

But never for the most common reason for ejection: not drinking enough.

4. What are your interests?
I'm new to the city, so I can't tell you much, but if you like jazz, we have a boatload of jazz clubs here, including some old historical ones.

11. Jazz Would Be Nice
I love Jazz. We are going to be taking our 5 year old with us, so I don't know if we could make it to a Jazz club on this trip. But thank you so much for the idea. :)

6. Coupla places
The Orchard in the lower East side. <http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/41861229/new_york_ny/the_orchard.html> They aren't kidding about the mushrooms on flatbread -- one of the best things I have eaten this year.
It is a BYO place so you can save a few bucks.

Also, The Spotted Pig. <http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/food/reviews/underground/n_10089/> Can be crowded and loud but get the Devils On Horseback and you will be a believer.

I live in Chicago but my sister lives in NY. She is a total foodie so if you want more recommenf=dations just ask.

When will you be there? I'm going Nov 2-13. (Yes, Im voting absentee so I don't have to be in CA)

I tried to get Daily Show tickets. No luck. :-(

I love the Natural History Museum. The Planetarium show is really cool.

hit the Blue Note in the village.....its on W 3rd street, I believe..pretty close to Washington Square Park. Let me know if you are taking the subway and I can tell you what line to take, but if you take the A train you can go pretty much from the Battery to Uptown on it.....(gotta lot of stops though) Little Italy is great...(Mulberry st) and Chinatown is amazing, its like going to another country right in the city...(Canal Street, Mott street etc.....)

He played with Pharoah Sanders as part of Coltrane's 80th b-day celebration. Amazing show.

http://www.foundationforcontemporaryarts.org/news/calendar.html

this is a calendar of experimental arts -- mostly performing -- programs going on in new york.

i highly recommend going to see the unusual -- the contemporary to see what you won't/can't see else where.

it also can give a wonderful window on the future -- things coming this way.

there is also this

23. Reasonably priced tasty Italian food close to Time Sq:
La Alegria 44th St and 9th Ave. I used to live around the block and would eat there regularly. Also if you like dive bars, Rudy's one block over is a Hells Kitchen icon; just look for the big pig.

25. There's a place near Union Square
It's called Pure Food & Wine. It's a really expensive upscale raw food place, but the food is so delicious, you don't really realize...oh, I'm eating raw veggies. Hey, Samantha loved it on "Sex and the City" (or was it the waiter?). And they have a nice selection of alcoholic bevvies (I'm not much of a drinker, so I had a lavendar tisane).

There's a giant--about five stories--Barnes & Noble right at the Union Square subway stop.

On Avenue B near 4th Street, there's a vegetarian diner called Kate's Joint that has a sort of 1960s vibe. When we were there, they had Bob Dylan playing on the sound system. And the portions are generous.

I did not like Red Bamboo on 4th Street in the Village. The food is decent, but the service sucks. I hear Gobo, on 6th Avenue (aka Avenue of the Americas) is good, but I haven't had a chance to go yet.

For shopping, I loved Bluestockings (feminist bookstore) and MooShoes (vegan shoes and purses and stuff). There are five cats who work at MooShoes, one of whom nipped me while I was patting her. But I'm used to a cat's licking turning into a bit of a nip. I wish more stores had critters who "work" there.

I wish I could avoid Times Square because it's so damn touristy. But my boyfriend likes this comic book store near there and likes wandering through the Virgin Megastore.

The British-Canadian cosmetics company Lush has a store on 34th Street and Broadway (near there). They make the most awesome soaps and shower gels and bath stuff in the world. Yes, it's expensive, but it's worth it. When I'm approaching the Georgetown (DC) store, I can smell it half a block away.

Have fun, look like you know what you're doing and where you're going, and try to get a little purse/pocket guide of the subway system you can check discreetly. It really helped me get around. But I also have a fairly good sense of direction.
