2. So you like hiking?
Shall we walk from this sign down to the Colorado River? We'll have plenty of time for stimulating conversation.

Not sure how much energy we'll have left for the spanking though

4. Hmmm... which kind?
I do fiction and nonfiction. My fiction is... eclectic. I lean toward fantasy but shy from fantasy convention. I enjoy using lies to tell the truth. My nonfiction is probing, analytical, and quite political. ;)

6. I am more interested in your fiction (among other things, wink...)
I too write. What is your benchmark fiction piece, the one that you weigh all subsequent pieces against? Mine is the first story I sold in 1996, "Freedom Smells like Red Wine Vinegar".

7. I haven't sold anything yet...
I've been absorbed by the corporate world and by graduate school. And I may be going back for more next year. In fact, my non-fiction has a better chance of selling at this point than my fiction.

8. no no... tell me about your favorite piece of original fiction
sales or no sales, I don't care about that. Tell me why you write fiction. I write non-fiction too, telecommunications training material, it's so boring the CDs come with a Surgeon General's Warning on them.

9. My most recent piece is about a man...
in Colorado. His life is empty. He's almost pitiful until God grants His mercy. The tale is surreal at parts, but it all begins when this man decides to bake a cake.

10. sounds intriguing, where did you get the idea for the story?
(twirls finger around rim of wine glass). Generally I get the idea for a scene, then work from there. For example -

in the Union Dues stories (3 of which are available for free download at www.escapepod.org) -

Iron Bars and the Glass Jaw, I had a mental picture of a gigantic man in a tiny jail cell.

Off-White Lies, I watched a program about a brutal bank robbery in LA and that gave me the idea for the final sequence on the story, which I wrote first.

The Baby and the Bathwater, I imagined lightning coming out of the playpen at my Mother-in-law's house.

Cleanup in Aisle 5, I saw a guy drenched in egg in my minds eye.

11. The first line just sort of "popped" out...
and the rest poured afterward. It's a bit quirky and outside my usual genre.

12. sometimes that spontaneity makes for the best writing
where do you see the story going? How long? Have you thought about markets for it?

13. I've already submitted it to a couple of writing competitions...
one didn't pan out. Still waiting on another.

I wouldn't mind shopping it, although I need a place that will accept simultaneous submissions.

14. no... si-mul-taneous sub-missions? What do those words mean?
LOL... seriously, send it to more than one place, always. You should be lucky enough to have a couple of mags/e-zines want the same piece.

I entered only one contest this year, the "first novel chapter contest" at www.thewritingshow.com. I didn't even place for honorable mention. Alas, in the intervening weeks I sold two shorts though, that paid more than the contest winnings would have.

I get my market reports from www.ralan.com which is more of a SF/F/H themed listing, but I've found all of my good leads there and he keeps it VERY up to date.
