8. The Ghost of Paul Hume -PLUS- A Heartwarming Kelly Osbourne Story
Remember Paul Hume? He was the music critic for The Washington Post. In 1950, during Harry Truman's term of office, his daughter, Margaret, gave a piano recital which was reviewed by Hume.

Here's what Hume had to say about Margaret -- and what "Give-'em-Hell-Harry" had to say to Hume:
"Miss Truman is a unique American phenomenon with a pleasant voice of little size and fair quality," Hume wrote of the performance.

"She is extremely attractive on stage, yet Miss Truman cannot sing very well. She is flat a good deal of the time. . ."

Truman was livid and fired off a letter, branding Hume "an eight ulcer man on four ulcer pay". Then he added: "Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens, you'll need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below!"

Truman was prone to what his staff referred to as "longhand spasms" when he would fire off unpresidential letters to settle scores with his adversaries.

(attribution)
That being said, I have to admit to a certain bias in favor of the younger Miss Osbourne (the older Miss Osbourne being the seldom-seen Aimee Osbourne). A certain young woman of my acquaintance, whom I'll call Sara, went to see KO's concert last year, and her boyfriend forgot to pick Sara and her friend up after the concert was over. Kelly saw the pair standing around as the mean streets of Philadelphia went deserted and cold. She invited them into the touring bus, where they all had a swell old time until one of the Moms -- Sara's mother -- was able to drive down and pick them up, nearly three hours later.

There was no booze, no drugs, no sex, and smoking was verboten on the tour bus. Kelly and the entire band and crew were very friendly and "adopted" them for the evening. Kelly especially took to Sara, in spite of the fact that her girl-friend was the socially more dominant one. (She spent most of the time with the guitar player, if memory of the story serves.)

When Mom arrived, she spent about half an hour chatting with the star and her "posse" and was astounded at how Pat-Boone-esque it all was. (Well, Pat-Boone-esque without the combat Xtianity and smug moralizing.) To this day, Kelly and Sara stay in occasional contact via e-mail.

Yep, the young Miss Osbourne needs to work on her voice a bit. Maybe several bits. But at this point, the whole Osbourne coven gets a pass from me.

I wonder whether Hillary Duff or Mandy Moore would have reacted the same way. That may not be fair to HD or MM, but it's worth wondering. In retrospect, we know what a trouper The Celebrated Britney was('nt).

And wouldn't you know, once again, American Gothic needs an evil, wicked, decadent Eurotrash family to show us what Family Values are all about.

Now, if you'll turn to page 329 in your hymnals, "What A Fiend We Have In Jeebus".

11. I recall the Margaret Truman incident quite well.
Laughing just thinking about it. True, Margaret never made it with the Met but she could write pretty well. Hume was quite conservative in his opinion about Margaret's vocal abilities but Harry must have had a tin ear.I have enjoyed watching the Osbournes and get the impression they are a close & decent family with similar problems a lot of families experience. Can't help feeling affection for Ozzie. He has a certain ingenuous air about him.

14. She's an anti-singer singer.
She's not suppossed to be good, therein lies her charm. It's her personality she's selling, that we're either buying or not. Personally I llike her, she seems like a sweet kid. Wouldn't listen to her sing...

Could Madonna sing ... or Ozzy, for that matter (hint: HELL NO!)?

15. Interestingly enough
I also saw Kelly's performance of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". I thought she did quite well with it.

Compared to Ms. Spears (and the ubiquitous Shania Twain,) Kelly can sing. She's no Aretha Franklin or Annie Lennox, but she's not bad. She also seems to have a sense of humor about the whole thing.

Let's face it, at least Kelly Osbourne will sing in public without benefit of prerecording, unlike Shania Twain and the aforementioned Ms. Spears.
