6. Saw him in Portland Me 1987(?), his 50th birthday party
Edited on Thu Dec-25-03 04:29 AM by Old and In the Way
His 6 year old son walked in with a top hat...damn funny. 1st time the band had played in 10 years...they never missed a beat.

Had a few pints with the band at the Top Of The East after the show....cool.

7. Dave toured with Jerry Jeff for a few years.....he co-wrote Mr. Bojangles
Love Jerry Jeff...he was my hero, along with Commander Cody in the 70's.

Did ja know that Dave Bromberg had the Grateful Dead back him on his acoustic album? Only time they ever backed a solo act.....

5. David Bromberg - "Kansas City"
Hah! - He's the real deal.

and Lonnie Mack - "Oreo Cookie Blues"

Factoid - I saw Roy Buchanan's last show before he hung himself after falling off the wagon and being arrested in Salt Lake.

9. Yeah, little club in Aspen, 1988 I think
But for the drinking he might have been the greatest pure electric guitar player ever. I've never seen anyone do a pure riff like him, mind-blowing string-bending, but he had absolutely no charisma or singing voice - kinda like Leo Kottke, who I still think is the best pure acoustic player of all time.

14. i don't know about that....
....he's a great player. and, he's got a great voice too.

anyways, saying someone is the greatest player or in the top 10 or whatever is silly anyways. everyone likes something different. i know people that think steve vai or yngwie malmsteen are among the greatest players that ever lived. i just have to laugh because their music doesn't interest me at all. i'd much rather listen to django reinhardt or bromberg or clapton, etc.

13. i have seen bromberg many many times....
...and i agree he is one of the best guitar players i've seen. he used to play monthly at a few places in chicago including orphan's on lincoln avenue and biddy mulligan's on sheridan road. he lives in chicago, so we were lucky enough to see him quite a bit.

bromberg can play any stringed instrument.....i'm sure if you wrapped some rubberbands around a cigar box, he'd make that sound good too. when he stopped touring for several years he was actually studying the art of making violins.

if you've never heard bromberg, buy the double CD entitled "how late'll ya play til" to get a good sampling of all the styles he can play...rock, blues, bluegrass, ragtime.

15. just picked up a two-albums-on-one-CD offering from Bromberg . . .
"In My House" and "You Should See The Rest Of The Band", circa 1978-79 . . . great stuff, including a couple of those fiddle medleys that he likes to do . . . saw him years ago in Portsmouth, New Hampshire . . . great and unique bluesman, among other things (like a violin-maker) . . .

17. I have an Arlo Guthrie video
with Bonnie Raite, Jerry JeffWalker, David Bromberg, and other greats gathering together that is simply wonderful. Bromberg does his 'Testifyin' sketch that I just love. I saw John Raite (Bonnie's dad) in concert many years ago. Beautiful people!
