Anybody see The Prestige?
Just curious what you think. I have seen some really bad reviews and then I have seen some really good ones.

3. I enjoyed it.
it's not without its flwas (I thought it started out kinda slow and the ending was a little predictable) but it was still pretty good.

4. I liked it!
You really do have to pay attention, things which seem extraneous and repetative are important later on. Neither of the main characters are particularly sympathetic, but the acting is so good, it doesn't matter.

5. I don't like Christopher Nolan
Edited on Mon Oct-23-06 12:32 PM by Bombtrack
one of those "phenomenons" I just disagree with the consensus on so much.

Batman Begins was good, but I think that was more due to the combo of the cast, the screenwriter, and just because they were treating Batman in a non-Hollywood-bullshit way.

The only other movie as highly rated as Memento I disliked more that comes to mind is Garden State.

And that Al Pacino Alaska movie was a waste of time as well.

7. What gets me
is that Insomnia was a rip off of another movie...with Stellen Skaarsgard as Pacino characters...I can't remember the name of the movie, but I saw it on IFC back in 2004...it was the same thing as Insomnia, except it took place in the N. part of Iceland(it was a northern scandinavian town)....

6. The wife and I saw it this weekend. We both LOVED it.
It is not a "feel good", "romantic" movie by any stretch of the imagination. It's dark and somewhat sinister. I think a lot of reviewers were expecting another "The Illusionist", and it's not (though that is also a very good movie). "The Prestige" jumps back and forth in time and you have to pay attention to keep track of the basic thrust of the story, and it relies on you to put all the little pieces together yourself to unravel all the mysteries it involves. It's kind of like "Memento" in that way.

That having been said, I have about an average IQ, and I was able to follow everything just fine. I was pleasantly surprised and felt very entertained by the end of the movie.

The performances are all terrific, even David Bowie with his limited screentime.

I highly recommend it. Just be prepared to put on your thinking cap prior to entering the theater. My test for a really good movie is if I'm still thinking about it two days later. I not only am still thinking about this one, but I'm having "aha!" moments about certain things that happened in the movie and why they happened that way.
