Even Steve Irwin was freaked out by spiders.
In defense of me, haruka and everyone else freaked out by spiders, I give you the late, great Crocodile Hunter, being freaked out by a spider. It's at the 28 second mark in the video:

2. Doesn't matter. It's his reaction when it gets on him.

That's where the fear is--it's all about whether the spider gets on you.

4. Yes, but I love his reaction.
It was worth seeing the horrifying spider to see Steve Irwin freak out. Makes me like him (and miss him) even more.

6. I wouldn't say I love spiders,
even I saved many pet tarantulas from friends (after showing the horrible creature to everybody, it became tiresome I guess, like with most exotic pets in cages), and I would react the same way like in the video - that's just normal. Heck, I was quite startled when I clean out my one little pond and a frog was right jumping into my face. It's all in the brain I guess.

7. Well, for some of us, it does go much deeper than that.
When I was 3-4 years old, I frequently had nightmares that a spider was in my bed, and could not be consoled until my bed had been completely stripped and searched for spiders. That fear has stayed with me into adulthood, and I am very, very afraid of them. It's not just a "being startled" thing.

Now, this is the same child who spent most of her days chasing after frogs, lizards, bugs and any other creepy crawly thing I could find. I have had pet lizards, pet frogs, pet mice, pet snakes, and even a pet praying mantis over the years. But when it comes to the 8-legged creatures, I have a really, really deep-seated fear of spiders--and it's very specific, as I'm not afraid of anything else similarly "creepy."

15. So do I.
I know I've told this story before, but it's been awhile so I'll tell it again. I was sorting through boxes of stuff after a move, and I looked down to see a gigantic spider on the sleeve of my t-shirt. I screamed, jumped up and flung the shirt completely off and hurled it across the room, all in one quick motion. It was totally involuntary. I'm just so thankful that didn't happen in public.

Hell, I've posted pictures on DU of me with a handful of waxworm grubs feeding one of my geckos by hand.

I mean, shit I once stayed calm in a situation where I was surrounded by five German Shepherds with their hackles up growling at me for about 10 minutes. Anyone of those dogs would have been physically capable of killing me, if they wanted to. I understand dog psychology pretty well, so I was relatively confident that they wouldn't actually attack me. Most people would have shit a brick in that situation. I was fine. And with a day or two, I had perfect control over those dogs.

Spiders. No way.

12. Grow up kids
Steve wasn't scared of much. He loved animals. Any guy who can outrun angry lions, hold a scorpion in his hand with a look of awe on his face, that's my kinda guy.

And Khash lays down the law.....

13. I'm not sure I understand.
I find it incredibly endearing that Irwin freaked out momentarily when the spider got on him. I loved the guy to pieces, and loved his lack of fear of animals; that moment just made him a little more human to me.

16. Afraid of spiders?
I woke up one morning and the ex was pounding the sh** out of the nightstand on my side of the bed.
Had to buy new false eyelashes.

When I moved up here, I found my 1st potato bug. I mailed it to him.

We're even.

17. Spiders freak me out bad too
Ijust get the heebie jeebies at the sight of them; other bugs do not do that to me. I too used to catch snakes and lizards and frogs and whatevers --- dragonflies in jars --- when I was a kid, just to check them out for awhile and then let them go again.

I don't kill spiders when I see them, though, unless they are in the sink or tub and need to be washed down the drain --- kindly with cold water --- people tell me that's where they came from anyway but I don't believe it. They skulked in from the ceiling fan in the bathroom I suspect.

Nice to know I'm not the only one!
