Parents and youth sports: You ain't gonna BELIEVE this one
These whacko parents are led by an Alameda County (Calif.) Superior Court judge whose daughter plays on the Castro Valley High girls basketball team. They have a lawyer. A fucking lawyer.

The parents' complaints against (Coach Nancy) Nibarger, who played college basketball at Kansas State and was an assistant coach at high-powered college programs like Cal and Kansas, seem innocuous: They range from missing picture day to kicking the team out of the gym after a lackluster practice. But Nibarger's supporters suspect the allegations mask the parents' real beef — that their daughters didn't get enough playing time.

Three times Nibarger's coaching style was investigated by school officials and found acceptable. Each time the parents group appealed the results. She managed to retain her job, but with restrictions that many coaches would find impossible to bear. In fact, many think the sanctions were designed to force her to quit, but Nibarger is sticking it out.

(snip)

It may be right in principle, but it won't be easy. When tryouts take place in two weeks, Nibarger will not be allowed to choose her team. That will be done by a six-person "panel," which will include parent representatives and members of the community, as well as Nibarger and her assistant coaches.

Not, however, the assistant coaches Nibarger had last year. Those two, a member of the Cal women's basketball Hall of Fame and a San Leandro policeman, were told by the school board they were not welcome back, even though there was not a single complaint filed against them. And finally, Nibarger is required to have an "ombudsman" attend every practice to keep an eye on things.

1. Parents. Need. To. Chill. The. Fuck. Out.
God, I hate parents like that. I'm so lucky my parents were never like that. I mean, they drove me all up and down the east coast every weekend for years while I was competing, but they never pushed me. I had the skill & the desire, so they supported it.

One of the reasons I hate refereeing is the parents. Well, that and the fact that I get insanely bored being a kata judge. Although, I guess if I randomly tazered* some parents, it would liven things up a bit.

*No, I am not really advocating randomly tazering people...I swear.

No lawyers ever entered into it but it was horrible.

Long story as short as possible (I had this written up into a short piece once) --- I was on the "black team" seeing as how we had TWO black players one of whom's dad was the coach. Well as soon as we started playing we whiped people off the court. We had THE best and THE tallest player in the league (one of the black kids) plus we were extremely well coached. We put up 70 or 80 points on teams routinely. This was recreation league not the Jr.High team.

We ended up losing when our star player got sick. I scored 20 or some points and we lost to one of the top teams in the league by 2 points or something like that but the floodgates had opened. Everyone sensed weakness and they lept. My bestfriend's team started talking all kinds of trash and his dad made a point of bragging about what they were going to do to us....well guess what-the whole team got back together and we beat them in a way that is hard to understand if you don't play basketball. We emptied the bench (we always did since we were so far ahead) and THEY upped the score on the other teams starters. We, the starting five, hooted and hollered the whole time.

After the game a "Special league meeting" was called and all the other coaches browbeat, cussed out, and outvoted our coach ( he was a janitor at a local college) and the new rules were set. Our star guy could only play 2 quarters and couldn't score over 10 points. So when he came in the game they just attacked him-he had to choose when he wanted to score those 10 points.

We still beat everyone and we got to the championship game and the coach for that team waived the ridiculous rules and froze the ball the whole game. They just stood there with it the whole time- fair enough. We won 16-14 or something like that and I (ME) hit the winning bucket from way outside with only a few seconds left.

The worst part were the calls from the stands. Lots of people came to watch us play and my mom told me that we only heard the stuff that people were willing to yell out. There were horrible nasty racist really really bad racist of the lowest form comments made and joked about right behind them. My stepfather confronted one guy and after that they didn't sit directly behind my folks but they still made the comments and the cat calls were still just as vicious.

Nasty nasty stuff.

people who are willing to coach kids' sports teams. Let's make it even more difficult. :eyes:

This dude I work with coaches middle school football in his spare time. He says he's almost quit several times because of asshole parents. The only thing that's kept him there are the kids he's had for a few years in a row and with whom he's formed a bond.

11. Pretty good -- yourself?
I played field hockey and ran track in high school, and forbade my parents from coming to any of my games or meets, because it would make me self conscious. But, some parents were quite bonkers.

12. I'm doing great.
I played Volleyball in High School, but I have to admit that we had parctically no insane people in or around the league.

7. At the school where my dad teaches,
a couple seniors stole some stuff from the drama department. The office, figuring it was a senior prank, simply said over the announcements that the department needed what was stolen and so it needed to be returned, and they could do so by dropping it off outside the theater. Well, weeks went by, and nothing was returned (they made the announcement several times). Finally, these girls were caught red-handed with the stuff. Apparently, the girls were field hockey players; as punishment, instead of putting something on their permanent records) the school did not allow them to participate in the last regular-season home game (the "senior" game where the senior members of the team are honored).

The parents of these girls got pissed and hired a lawyer. There was a whole commotion on the day of the game (the lawyer showed up, then the police showed up). The girls never did play, but yeah, I know well enough that parents have the tendency to be batshit insane.

13. What happened to parents who just went to the games as spectators?
When did that stop? It happens here, too...not on this grand scale, but parents have more complaints than the kids do. The parents are the ones who call to whine and complain. The parents are the ones who...

Gah.

Do. Not. Get. Me. Started.

I go to my boys' baseball games (well, except for #2 son's...I'm apparently a jinx and have been disinvited) but all I do is sit and watch. And cheer. And embarrass them with 'happy dances'.
