Was "The Exorcist" really a scary movie?
I have to admit, I haven't seen the whole thing.

Is it really terrifying? :shrug:

Since I saw it originally at a quite impressionable age it was totally fucking scary. Now, probably not as much. Though that picture just posted of Regan did give my heart quite a pitter patter.

5. I Saw It When I Was 13
Scared the crap out of me. I didn't sleep for many nights, but I was 13 years old at the time. I saw it again recently and it was no big deal. I actually laughed at the pivotal horror scenes. Just goes to show you what age and perspective can do.

6. I think "hauntingly creepy" sums it up for me...
I saw the restored version on the big screen a few years ago and it didn't really scare me, but it did creep me out for a few days after...

8. So scary, I wouldn't go to see it. And I still haven't seen it. Just bits of it.
I have seen clips on the net of all the "famous" scenes in it, but I have never sat down and watched the whole thing. I was 13 when it first came out and I was too scared to go see it, and I still haven't gotten over that.

12. It scares the shit out of me!! I have seen it a couple of times, and it
always gives me nightmares for a couple of nights afterwards.

I work for Warner Bros. and we were doing some work on the Director's cut. I was working some overtime on a Saturday and I was the only person in the building. When Regan came walking down the stairs like a spider I thought I was going to jump out of my skin!

That gave me the creeps.

16. Yes, but I thought the book was scarier...
but even knowing what to expect, the movie scared me. That sweet little girl, speaking in Mercedes McCambridge's voice, saying, "The sow is mine!" was horrifying to me.

27. Yes, indeed...it's very well-written
And you get more explanation about "Pazuzu" and the exorcism rituals, etc. There again, it has been 30-something years since I read it.

I saw it when it came out and the theatre was completely full with lines formed outside of the theater with people waiting to see the next showing.

When the movie ended, the theater was only half-full.

People had been leaving ever since the first scary scene where she turned her head around while she was sitting on the bed and talked in the voice of the British guy who had just been killed.

20. At the time it was made it was both shocking and scary
Back then people weren't used to seeing a little girl yell things like, "Your mother sucks cocks in hell," to a priest or um, doing...things with a crucifix. But today these things aren't quite as shocking. And I personally am not scared of the devil as I don't believe in him, unless you are talking about the president.

So no, I don't think it's that scary anymore. It is however, a very well made movie with excellent performances, and it does make a powerful dramatization about the nature of evil, even if you're like me and don't believe in the supernatural personification of it.

21. It Hit My Catholic Friends Especially Hard

I didn't see it when it came out in 1973, but most of my Catholic acquaintences who saw it at the time were genuinely traumatized.

I've seen it since, and I thought it was well done; more unpleasant than terrifying.....

22. Stairs now a tourist atraction
That long set of stairs in Georgetown is now a tourist attraction. After seeing the movie(the scene where her throat balloons like a bullfrog freaked me out at the time) I went to take a look at the house. The window was still boarded over from the filming. A friend went directly from the theater to the stairs one night. While climbing someone appeared at the top. They said they turned tail and ran.

28. When I was in college...
...I visited the stairs with a few friends. We took turns photographing eachother as 'crumpled heaps' at the bottom of the stairs.

Well, it seemed funny at the time.

24. I saw it when it first came out
at an afternoon matinee. My husband didn't want to see it so I went alone. When it was over 3 sailors who had been sitting behind me came up and said "I can't believe you sat through that whole movie ALL BY YOURSELF". As if the idea of a woman watching something scary without a man to hold onto was just beneath their comprehension.

26. Unlike many "scary" movies of that period and now
gore and death do not carry the film. While it is true that there is a particularly graphic scene depicting a possesed girl and that death is a theme, I found the scariest moments in the movie are in rather simple simple events - a clock that stops ticking, the increasing tremors of an old man, a sudden flame in an attic. That's because the movie is not about violence, but evil pure and simple. It's also about doubt/faith. One of my top 3 movies of all time.
