I have a five gallon bucket full of candy for tomorrow night
If that's not enough I have a jar of pennies I can dip into. Is this a great country or what? Who benefits more from halloween, candy manufacturers or dentists?

2. I hate to run out
and I seldom do. My wife will end up taking some to work and I'll see if any of the neighbors want any that's left over after their kids get on the school buses Wednesday morning.

3. I buy 5 lbs of good candy each year -
Reeses Cups, Snickers, that kind of thing, but haven't seen a single trick-or-treater in the five Halloweens I've lived in Northern Maine. I can't seem to break away from the habit of being fully prepared like when I lived in NJ. If some ambitious kid ever does venture up my driveway, he or she will hit the mother load.

5. We get about 25 each year
My wife and I ensure we get the candy we like. One would think that Stephen Kings area would be run over with trick or treaters. Didn't Delores Claiborne live up that way?

The King house is usually made up to look kind of spooky. I'm a little farther north (and about 80 - 100 years back in time)than that though. My road is 20 something miles long and there are no more than 80 homes on it. Any of the kids from this "neighborhood" get driven to town like catnhatch said. I'm much more likely to find a lost deer hunter staggering out of the woods with low blood sugar than to see any kids.

9. I'm in New Hampshire and routinely have kids from Maine...
...hit my house on halloween....I live in a developement in a fairly rural area outside of Rochester and a mile and a half from the border of Maine...that makes our place the nearest for many kids with single family homes, set fairly close and well lit...you know-both fun and safe.Across the line and also places near here you might have to walk 5 miles to visit 10 houses so this place with 100 homes within 70-80 acres becomes halloween central.

6. Offer a healthy alternative.
Mr Info and I - quite tongue in cheek - began offering kids a choice between candy, sweet spuds or broccoli a few years back. We had a neighbor kid who told us he didn't like candy and wished he could get something else for Halloween. Thus we were inspired to plop a head of broccoli and some sweet spuds into our candy bucket. We get some pretty hilarious comments from the kids and parents. We usually have a couple kids opt for sweet spuds and the neighbor kid always takes the broccoli.

We have 345 pieces plus the backup spuds and broccoli. I hope we have enough.

7. I could very easily be a vegetarian
Broccoli is the last thing we got left in the "garden" and it is incredibly good for the body. Those are excellent choices.

We go to my boyfriend's family cottage up in the San Juan Islands. It's great!

14. Interesting...your community does Halloween in the evening on the 31st
That's just amazingly nostalgic.

Up here it's always during daylight. Usually on a weekend. And it's becoming common for the whole thing to take place in a school gymnasium.

17. Speaking for the dentist population,
I personally give out lots of regular candy. I would like to think that candy manufacturers get more out of Halloween than dentists do, judging from the low number of cavities in kids today. I worry more about the adults who sneak candy every now and then. The streak of holidays from now until New Year's day is a decay-generating event like no other.

21. Doc you are absolutely right about the streak of holidays
and down here in South Mississippi and South Louisiana the streak goes through Mardi Gras and ends appropriately on Ash Wednesday.

20. We get fewer kids every year
in my neighborhood, which is a nice, middle-class area of single family homes. Last year we had none at all. I'm not sure if I'll even bother with buying candy, since I'll just end up eating it myself. Maybe a couple of rolls of quarters in case kids show up. Somehow pennies seem insulting these days.

22. We throw pennies in a jar
and about every six months we roll them up and take them to the SPCA. We call it Pennies for Puppies. They really appreciate the contributions.

25. The roll of pennies are a good idea.
I think I may start giving those out but only once I run out of candy....which is quite early because I usually get alot of kids trick or treating.

28. eat some for me and Hubby
Hubby goes into the hospital tomorrow morning for an angiogram(+), and then dialysis to get out the dye. Then he has to stay overnight for observation. So I will be there with him, knitting.

No Halloween for us.
