Interesting discussion about same-sex marriage on C-Span earlier today.
C-Span had a professor of policial science, Evan Gerstmann, who's written a book, "Same-Sex Marriage and the Constitution". I was pleasantly surprised at the (relatively) small "homosexuality will destroy us all" fundementalist types who called in. One caller said that America isn't ready for the giant step of marriage yet, and we should enact civil unions first. Most callers seemed (at least to me) to be somewhat accepting of gay marriage. Professor Gerstmann made some very good points.

All in all, it's sort of amazing, actually. How far we gay people have come along in a relatively short period of time.

I know we've got a long way to go (and huge roadblocks like the FMA).

But it IS encouraging.

1. Thanks.
I am too thin-skinned to watch/listen to such shows. I get angry so easily. So thanks for posting this -- it is encouraging.

(I'm getting some bumper stickers made up that read "THE FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.")

2. I've found that this approach works well against resistant types...

...especially those with religious reasoning:

If your primary objection to homosexuality is your perception of the "homosexual lifestyle" (as is the case with many that try rationalizing their objection that is actually based on religion), wouldn't it be wise to encourage others to seek out and maintain long-lasting commitments, registered unions? Social cohesion, public health (minimization of high-risk behaviors)...and there's no reason for your church, if it objects, to be forced to perform civil union ceremonies, it's a social contract between two persons that would be recognized by the state and federal governments.

ON EDIT: although I admit this appeals to logic, the same kind of logic that they deny in insistence on "abstinence only" sex education.
