Comes the humidity, and with it the pain.
I've had an incredibly pain-free year, for whatever reasons. Still, nothing lasts forever, so with this sudden little bout of warm damp weather (the Dallas Texas area), my bones have suddenly remembered they're supposed to be disintigrating with arthritis. And damn, their memory seems to be just fine. A week ago I wished there was a Walkathon I could enter. Today I can't hobble around the house without my cane. Damn. Must be getting old!

At least I have some killer pain pills on hand, and a definite will to make use of them! (No Rush jokes, please, but if you feel you must, at least make 'em GOOD ones!)

1. As a new member of the "Weather-induced Pain Club..."
Edited on Sun Dec-28-03 12:04 AM by alg0912
...let me offer my sympathies. I've noticed the pain in my leg spiking when the low pressure systems roll in (and, here in the northeast, we've had about two lows a week). I'm (temporarily) on Vicadin, so the pain's been manageable but, given the truss bridge recently installed in my right leg, it'll be something I'll have to deal with for the rest of my life. And, unless I start "doctor-shopping" now, I won't be able to rely on the Vicadin forever ;)...

<edited to insert winky-smiley - no plans to dr-shop here :)>

2. hey PN6
I'm in Plano and I can remember only 2 or 3 cold days this "winter". I feel very cheated because I like cold weather. I'm sorry the weather affects you so . . .

4. It's the reason I moved from northern Indiana
to get away from the unrelenting cold of winter (it messes me up ten times as bad as the humidity). I guess I haven't gone far enough into the desert country yet...

5. I'm sorry to hear that. I have the same problem
and I'm in pain as well. No, you're not getting old. I'm 22, and I've had weather-related pain most of my life. Here's a hug to help you through.

6. All hugs gratefully accepted
Not old at 48, just saddled with degenerative arthritis (diagnosed in my late 20s). One steel knee (replaced two times), an ankle that's crumbling into dust, degenerative disks in my neck, and on and on. Life can be such a joy!

But I'm blessed-- I'm far better off than many others here, and I only whine occasionally to hear the sound of my own voice. At least I'm still on my feet, and kickin'!

7. that's the spirit
Come to DC. You too, scarlet owl. We'll sit around w/ Mrs. V. and have a beer and all compare scars & aches.

Grand fun!

(PS I have a "Terminator" ankle. I'm surprised DHS hasn't demanded amputation before I board a plane.)

10. I know the weather related syndrome well...
While most people thought I was fulkl of it when told them a storm would roll in within 24 hrs, they now watch me more than a The Weather Channel!

I have osteoarthritis in my C-spine, (2,3,4,), and there is calcium buildup moving cloder to the CNS, which means...eventually, someone will either have a backfire, or fart, and I'll turn to quickly, and kaboom, it's all over, instant paralysis resulting in death.

Vioxx and occasional valium help a lot. The Vioxx, at least for me, it's different for others, seems to actually be slowing the progression; but at close to $85 for 30, it is an expensive remedy.
Now that I am unemployed, w/o insurance, it can get a little rough.

In any case, such is the joy of growing older.

With luck, we'll all get universal coverage soon, it will be here relatively soon.

11. Aches and pains weather map
The Weather Channel web site actually has an "aches and pains" map. They use some formula involving temperature, pressure and change of weather system to calculate how much you should hurt.

Glucosamine actually works pretty well for a lot of people. You might also want to look into ginger - comes in 500mg capsules, very safe and cheap, usual dose is 1 or 2 three times a day.

13. Thanks, I will try almost anything...
I am not to the point where I have to drag myself on the floor, but it is just the 'aches and pains' can really be a drag. I'm already getting the 'electrical' sensation across my shoulders on some days from the C-spine OA; nerves getting involved, this is NOT a good sign.

Thanks again,

Ras
