1. OMG, my 10 yr old dtr is sooooo into them.
she's constantly singing some song of theirs with such lines as, "not being no Cinderella..." ...and "I'm gonna rescue myself." In a way, it's a cool song b/c it's all about girl-empowerment.

I can dig it.

:hi: Floog!

2. And so goes the pop music market . . .
I am guessing it is "Spice Girls" recycled. As goes the culture, so goes the market. U got a sweet 10 year old you lucky devil. :)

5. Re the "Spice Girls" recycled comment
The Cheetah Girls were formed for a Disney movie of the same name, starring Raven Simone and the rest of the group. The plot concerned a young group trying to perform their own music in an industry that kept trying to force them into a commercialized mold. At one point a record exec tries to force them to change their name to "Global Getdown Girls" (or something like that) because marketing had determined that the letter "G" was going to be popular in the next year. The Cheetah Girls fought off the evil commercialization of the record biz so they could perform their own music. So, ostensibly, it was an anti-Spice Girls film.

Yeah, I've got daughters. :) And my seven year old loves them. And the thing to remember is that Disney created this group for that age bracket, not for us. For a seven to twelve age group, it's a good message. The songs are about empowering girls, not looking for a prince to save them, being themselves... typical Disney, or rather, typical Eisner-era Disney, when Disney started trying to overcome the "Sleeping Beauty" image.

9. I've given my oldest daughter (13) a wide range
from Janis Joplin to Usher. She wears Jimi Hendrix tee shirts to school, can identify Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis by voice, and understands why old Shakira is much better than new Shakira. She doesn't get Lauryn Hill yet, but she will. :)

So far, though, my seven year old just likes the Cheetah Girls, though.

8. I'm 73 years old.
When I was young and cutting my teeth on pop music, I was listening to real people who took real drugs and wrote real songs about real people and experiences and actually played real instruments and were not choreographed and so out of breath that they couldn't sing which is why the Cheetah girls were lip-synching on TV tonight.

I like my way better. :)

And I hate their music. Too poppy.

6. It's not meant to last, it's a Disney creation for pre-teens.
It isn't written for you, it's written for ten year olds. I never get why adults complain about shows like Barney and the Cheetah Girls. My seven year old likes them, and doesn't fully appreciate Shakespeare or Stanley Kubric yet (though she is into Miyazaki, already).

10. You are so deficient as a parent..
How can your seven year old not understand Shakespeare...

I was playing Lady MacBeth for the Royal Westlake Shakespeare theatre in the round down by the river and across the field by the age of eighteen months...

Kids these days...

13. She will be an otaku yet...
When she gets older introduce her Kazuki Akane (Escaflowne), Masashi Ikeda and Yasunao Aoki (Inuyasha)

She'll probably like Inuyasha and Escaflowne. I'd also recommend Fruits Baskets and Card Captor Sakura.
