If you're not sick of hearing about Richard the Peer, read on:
His latest victim:

The heat register in the office floor. (or whatever you call that grid thing where the heat & AC come out into the room.)

I reached down into the duct as far as I could, but I couldn't get it all. I don't know what to do.

I closed the vent, put newspaper on top of it, then a cookie sheet, then a cast iron skillet. That's keeping the odor out of the office.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

1. Put a Cedar Sachet In It
it does help a little bit. I have had the same problems in the past with cats. a toilet bowl freshener had mixed results. I washed the duct out with bleach and then put the cedar in it. Put cayenne pepper around the vent to help move the animals into the right spot to avoid marking stuff. My cats hated cayenne pepper. My dogs? They could care less. LOL.

4. Hmm! Cayenne pepper -- I'll put it in his favorite spots!
Great idea. I don't think he'll use a vent again. He must've been desperate because we took away all the cat beds, rugs, started doing the laundry at once instead of piling it in the laundry room, etc.

2. I found that lightly spraying a mix of water, vinegar and a touch
of hot pepper anyplace I don't want a kitten to go works wonders. They avoid that place, and certainly never go to the bathroom there.

5. Do you have a vacuum?
Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 02:07 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Put baking soda in the vac bag, then vacuum the precious prize out of there using the hose wand (it should be pretty dried out by now...?). After throwing away the bag with the treasure in it, replace with new bag, and vacuum up baking soda from a small pile on the floor to help freshen the vac. You can also freshen the vac by placing cotton balls dabbed lightly in peppermint oil. Sprinkle a little baking soda down into the heater vent, and if you put some vanilla on cotton balls and place over the vent cover, it will help absorb and diminsh any left over odor.

...just a suggestion...hope it helps :hi:

7. For #1

Turn off heater and fan.

Get a long handled scrubber brush...a baby bottle brush will work...one that has a bendable wire handle. (Dollar stores always have baby bottle brushes.)

Make a bowl of 1/4 c. white vinegar in about 4 cups of warm water.

Dip in brush, shake off excess, and scrub, and repeat several times.

Some of the solution will go down the vnet, but by shaking off the excess before wach scrub, there won;t be much.

Shake baking soda down into vent. Let dry for about 45 minutes to an hour. Use vacuum wand to remove baking soda from vent. (baking soda to absorb odor and the remaining moisture from scrubbing)

Allow a little more drying time, vacuum again, and then replace vent cover.

Place cotton balls dipped in vanilla over the vent to absorb any other remaining odor (pee and vinegar smells), and turn on ONLY the heater system fan for a few minutes to blow up any of the remaining baking soda. Start your heater again as needed.

Hope this helps! :hi:
