Bears' Jauron Fired After Five Seasons

By RICK GANO, AP Sports Writer

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Dick Jauron was fired as coach of the Chicago Bears (news) on Monday after his fourth losing season in five years with the team.

A posting on the team's official Web site read: "The Bears have scheduled a press conference for 1 p.m. today to announce the firing of head coach Dick Jauron."

The Bears closed a 7-9 season with a 31-3 loss at the Kansas City Chiefs (news) on Sunday.

Jauron, who had a year left on his contract, leaves Chicago with a record of 35-45 in the regular season and 0-1 in the playoffs. The firing comes two years after Jauron was voted the NFL's top coach.

1. That was coming.
Wonder who they are planning as a replacement.

2. It;'s about time.
That guy stunk. Poor clock management. Poor player judgement. Poor choices for assistants. This guy was the worst Bears coach since Neil Armstrong (not the astronaut). Unfortunately the Bears will probably hire some division 3 no-name coach for a replacement. They never shoot for the big guys like "Tuna". For that matter, they never bring in big name players either.

3. Now, If They Would Just Fire Angelo, I'd Be Happy
Edited on Mon Dec-29-03 12:42 PM by ProfessorGAC
He's a bonehead. He might have done some good drafting, so far, but his understanding of already working talent and his cap management have been horrible.

I blame him as much as the coaching staff for this season's problems. He's in over his head and will never (yeah i said NEVER) be a successful GM.

I have never understood the notion that a guy should feel entitled upon taking his first GM job, (no prior track record of GM success), to bring in his own coach. If you can't work with the management team that's already there, that's the new GM's failing, not the coaching staff. He was unable to get on the same page with the coaching staff, apparently, and for that, he should be fired too!

4. Now, if the Bears will only hire someone like Lou Saban.
Hell, I'd even settle for Jimmy Johnson.

10. Better Jimmy Than Nick Saban
Edited on Mon Dec-29-03 02:02 PM by ProfessorGAC
I think Lou Saban is dead, XNASA. Did you mean Nick, from LSU?

If so, can you name the last coach to make the successful transition from college to pros, other than Johnson?

Switzer. No, inherited Johnson's personnel, and after 2 years the Cowboys were dreadful.

Davis. Uh, seen the Brown's record?

Spurrier. Uh, seen the 'Skins record?

Actually, i saw in the Trib just a few days ago the list of college coaches that transitioned to the NFL that had more than one winning season ALL TIME. It was about 12 names long. In 75 years! 12 guys ever made the transition and ended up successful.

I think if you can't get one of the big names, then we might as well resign ourselves to more of the same.

6. I miss Ditka
I long for the days of gum throwing in San Fran and rollerskating into the Metrodome. Talk about a coach with some personality and the ability to fire up the fan base.

9. I'll second that sentiment
Once upon a time in a universe far, far away ... we all looked forward to a Bears game and didn't flinch every time play started.

But then Ditka left.

McCaskey will do his usual job of finding the cheapest coach available that won't present any real threat to his behind the scenes hands on running of the team.

Grumble, grumble, etc.

8. I guess NOT playing a last place schedule and NOT getting EVERY bounce
will result in this. Same thing happened to Fassel in NY.

12. Uh, No Thank You
Wasn't impressed when he was here. Wasn't impressed when he was in Philly. I could have coached that defense. They had 9 probowlers, 7 allpros, and 4 hall of famers on that team.

13. Awww. Geez. Why not?
He was a defensive genius!

*kmla turns satire off*

I used to be a Bears fan (up until about '89 or so). Loved 'em. Even through the start of the "Tobin years".

It just got too painful to watch. And then it just got boring.

Too sad. They were a formidable franchise at one time. Now they are just cannon fodder for anyone with a halfway decent offense.

16. Bring Back DITKA!!!!!
Put him in a uniform and he could take on any team by himself with one hand tied behind his back.

18. Buffalo and Arizona also axed their coaches
Wannestadt got an extension with the Fins, but lost personnel decision making power.

And The Raiders' Bill Callahan sure has alienated his players.
