Very weird -- Islands levitating in the Bermuda Triangle
(Washington, DC) Unusual images of the Earth have occasionally been uncovered after declassification of hundreds of thousands of spy satellite images by the National Imagery Mapping Agency (NIMA). In one of the more spectaular images, gathered on May 25, 2005, the apparent levitation of at least two Caribbean islands above the surface of the ocean was captured (above).

The islands are located in a large region popularly known as the Bermuda Triangle. The spy satellite imagery clearly shows shadows cast by two of the islands on the ocean surface in such a way that can only be explained if the islands are levitated above the ocean surface, in one case by approximately ten miles.

1. This is actually quite common.
People who live in the region know about it, but don't make a big deal out of it, as they don't want to be thought of as crazy folks.

14. Not only that, look at the pattern in the surf to the west northwest
of those shadows. It looks like those "shadows" are something poking above the surface of the water.

Not only that, but islands don't float on the surface. Having the surface planed off just below sea level so the islands can be Raptured temporarily is ridiculous.

6. Those are not shadows
Looks like sediment or some particulate being dragged by ocean currents.

21. Bingo
Those ARE shadows, ocean current shadows... or the leeward shores of the islands and the darker, clearer waters that are created by a current hitting an island and passing to either side, leaving a large irregular area of "eddy" current in the "shadow" of the island.

Note that the "shadows" don't conform to the shapes of the islands (if the islands were "floating" and the shadows were cast by sunlight, there would be conformance to the shapes of the islands).

9. Mods, WHY is shit like this allowed on DU?
This is the crap normal people point to when they criticize DU. This has nothing to do with politics, as I am not aware that either party is tackling this crucial floating island issue.

This shit just hurts credibility.

Where is the Abominable Snowman Forum?

Ugh!

12. Well, I think they clearly should be tackling this issue...
if the islands have already gone as high as 10 miles, who's to say they won't just float off into space?

Ahem. Kidding aside, I do see your point.

15. Well I knew they liked to get high in the Caribbean...ba-dum pum!
I'd, of course, love it if islands really levitated. Unfortunately, it's probably just turn out to be something else people fight over. "Trick of the light" is probably the best explanation possible.

In fact, if anyone's reading this, if you want to read some really weird things, check out the experiments they've been doing with light, speeding it up and slowing it down. Recently they've been able to speed light up to the point that when it enters a fiber optic cable, nomatter how long that cable is, the reflection from the other side of the cable (because a little light "bounces" back from the far end when a pulse reaches its destination) meets the pulse as it's sent. This property implies that if you had a fiber optic cable 1 lightyear long and performed the same experiment that as your accelerated pulse entered the cable it would be meeting it's weak "reflection" from the other end- which would, then, have been travelling a year before you sent it!

Bonus points: To go insane, if you place a sensor half a light year (in the middle) you see the pulse six months before you sent it, or something similar because sensing things profoundly affects things in our universe in a way we do not yet understand.

In fact, that is much weirder than a floating island.

..no the pictures do not show an island floating, just shadow optical effects that makes it look that way....sheesh.

22. Now You Know Why Bush Is Not Worried About Global Warming...
This is Bush's favorite site on the Internets!!!

"Those whiney Europeans and Kyoto Treaty supporters need to take a lesson from these folk. Instead of worrying about flooding from Global Warming they need to be learning how to levitate their own country. If these islanders learned how to do it, surely they can. ..... now watch this drive."

23. This website is kinda sickening actually...
Read the Polar Bear article. It's enough to make me smash me head against the keyboard. It attempts to explain that Polar Bears are being pushed to the brink of extinction by rising temperatures, not the hunters that are blowing them away like there's no tomorrow. If it's a joke, I missed it, and I have one hell of a sense of humor.
