Someone broke into my apartment...
while I was at my parents' house for Thanksgiving. I was having dinner with a friend in Dallas tonight on my way back to Austin when my best friend called. Her husband and kid had come over to check on and feed my cat...and the door had been kicked in. They couldn't tell if anything was missing. I called maintenance and they did a quick and dirty fix to keep the door shut. I drove three more hours to get home in a bit of a panic.

They got one of my dvd players and a handful of dvds. They took my cordless phone and answering machine. They ransacked my jewelry boxes but I don't see anything missing - it's all costume jewelry anyway. What I couldn't figure out was why they didn't take my brand new computer and flat screen monitor. The monitor had been moved...so I figure they must have been scared off in the middle of the heist. I went to turn the puter on and that's when I noticed that all the plugs had been unplugged so apparently I got really really lucky.

I figure someone must have come by outside or my cat made a racket or something and they just ran.

The police were really nice. A detective is supposed to call later. I have another dvd player so I don't have to replace that. I figure I'll go get a new answering machine tomorrow. The quick fix on the door is going to have to get really really fixed. Gotta call the bank and change my checking and saving account numbers just in case.

And yes, I'm babbling about it to keep from freaking out.

Somebody hug me.

2. Man, That Sucks!
Being broken into makes one feel violated!

I've had my car broken into.

I've had a dog killed by someone breaking into my in law's house and my dog was there so they killed it.

hang in there

9. If they had hurt my kitty...
it would have been 911 instead of the non-emergency police number.

I'm sorry about your dog.

It was a bizarre thing

It turned out to be a Sheriff's deputy that was doing the breaking in.

Pretty serious guy too, one day they found a shovel by the door, they'd left a radio running and I guess the guy was going to bash someone with it.

An alarm system finally stopped the breakins

But the dog was killed, poisoned.

On Edit: I'm so glad they didn't hurt your kitty.

People that hurt animals like that should be strung up

8. the cat is pretty good...
considering...and no, no insurance on the stuff that's gone...but it's not anything that can't easily be replaced. If they had gotten the computer I don't know what I'd do.

10. Another hug or two

I don't have OCD, but I double check locks around the house a couple times or so before calling it a night. With four kids and the missus working second shift, you can't be too careful. Occasionally there's a story of about home invasions here in the Dayton area -- doesn't matter where in town you live. With times being what they are, and the holiday season upon us, I prefer to think of myself as being vigilant rather than paranoid. All this without ever having been broken into. I can't guess how I'd be if I'd have experienced what you have. (Sadly though, the missus and her mother have both had this experience, my MIL twice -- most recently last year when she was 85.)

Glad that nothing was lost that can't be replaced. Gladder still that you and your cat are safe.

Take care.

just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you. Or something. :)

I think I'm gonna be ok. Part of me almost wants them to try to come back. I have a baseball bat and I know how to use it and I want to know what they did with my freakin' Blazing Saddles dvd. Bastards.

18. I know!
They got "Love, Actually" and "Cars" and a few others. But they didn't take the Indiana Jones box set or the Lord of the Rings movies. I think they just grabbed what they could and got out.

that my cat was here. I thought about taking her home with me over Thanksgiving. But decided to leave her here and have friends check on her. And the poor baby had to deadl with this all by herself. :(

19. I don't think it's really hit me yet...
I haven't had enough time to really process that someone was in my space and went through my things. I'm sure when it actually dawns on me I'll be a bit more of a basket case.

24. OMG how awful!
I hope they catch the buggers. They probably will eventually, so do an inventory and turn it in just in case the items are recovered.

Good Luck and God Bless!

26. dunno
I live in an apartment so I don't have a lot of control over that kind of thing. But I'm gonna talk to the apartment people about what happened when the office opens on Monday morning. See if there's anything they can do to make me feel a little safer.
