Mechanic help needed: Ford Ranger
Edited on Sun Nov-26-06 05:22 PM by BlueJazz
One of my trucks is a 94 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 cyl...5 speed manual Trans.

I noticed a oil leak on my garage floor after truck was there for 1 week...
not from engine...from transmission.

Before I crawl under the thing, which end (seal) would be most likely the culprit?

Plus (I used to overhaul engines..years ago) How bad is the job to change the seal?

And..if I took it somewhere.. (ballpark figure) How much Dough?

Thanks much!

2. Most likely the rear seal,
which should be fairly east to change. If it's the front seal, you'll have to pull either the motor or the transmission, which wouldn't be the worst thing to do on a 2wd pickup w/manual, provided you have the tools and stuff. It could also be a cover leaking, which would probably be the easiest thing of all, depending on how easy it is to get to. If you need to pull the transmission it's reaslly tough to get the clutch aligned again unless you have a clutch alignment tool.

3. Thanks...I'm hoping it's the real seal...if not I'll probably let a shop do it.
Thanks again for your input!

5. I had a '99 Ranger once
With less than 50,000 miles on it I had to put in over $3000 in repairs almost to the day the factory warranty ran out. Not your normal wear and tear, just poor quality and poor engineering. $3000 in repairs for one vehicle (with less than 50k) is more than I've paid in a lifetime for all my other vehicles combined, including some with 200k plus like my Camry.

Good luck.

7. I lurve my 2000 Ranger
Just got it last August, and it's sweet. 3.0 V6, stepside, extended cab. So far, no major repairs (just the tensioner) and it's got about 84K miles.
