My car is OFFICIALLY a beater today
I went to get in it, and it was covered in snow, the door stuck a bit so I gave it a tug and snapped off the handle. So, now I have to get in the passenger side, thus it now has official beater status. I'm so proud.

2. I thought you were going to say you paid it off.
by the time I get a car paid off it's so old it's barely worth keeping.

3. i bought a beater on purpose
i have no garage and just can't stand the thought of a nice car sitting outside in this country

so i got a '91 Buick, taped up the driver's door armrest, changed the oil and it's running great

4. rolf!
welcome to the club, my friend.

Beater are the best. I've never owned a non-beater, and I never intend to.

5. I make my old beater truck look cool.
And if I go to maps.google.com I can see it from space.

The best thing about it is embarassing my teenage kids when I pick them up from school.

"All the other parents" drive non-beater cars.

My poor traumatized kids. Drove a 78 chevy hippy van, complete with faded purple flames on the side in the last few years. One kid would demand to be let out a block away from the school so he could walk.

6. Mazel Tov on your car achieving beater status!
You must be proud!

The only car I have owned went from being a good car to beater status under my ownership. I had to carry bottles of water and cans of oil for its engine. Once I was able to help someone on the side of the road who's radiator had overheated. Because I always had water in my car I was able to give her a 2 litre bottle of water so she could be on her way.

7. Interesting
Just this week, in cold weather, I grabbed my driver's side handle and it went up and opened the door. And stuck there.

Now I have to bang it down back into place or the door won't close! :D

8. i used to date a guy who had to keep his window handle
in the glove compartment -- and he had to get it out to roll the window down.

AND he had to pop the hood and fiddle around with the engine to start the car.

what can i say -- he was ''gifted''.

9. what does beater mean?
I just got a new car after about a year of rolling down my window to get my door open! And other things. . . like no heater.

10. Car thread, must post.
Consider it an anti-theft feature. Beaters are seldom high on the insurance company most stolen lists.

14. Perhaps the same can be said for the driver LOL!
But seriously, what my biker neighbor says is "loud pipes save lives". But, when I drive my '58, itself rather loud (500+HP), I tend to get tailgated. Oh, if only I were uglier.
;-)

I get tailgated in my VW diesel truck as well, but that's because it goes 0-60 in just over three minutes.

And you would have had to pay for the four new tires & alignment I just got over the weekend. That ran about $500

21. Depends on the beater.
My mom's ancient station wagon (which she no longer drives) that I get stuck driving whenever I visit her has piss poor brakes and no AC. In Florida.

20. Not quite a beater, but...
...my current van came with some already existing scrapes and scratches, which in fact I consider an asset. It means I can actually make the vehicle functional and load stuff in and out without worrying about a nick here and a scrape there, or listen to my mother dump on me for being such a careless slob. (Yeah, like she should talk - she actually backed into my last car, and then hassled me for not bothering to get the dent fixed!) This is the first second-hand vehicle I've owned, and it's quite nice to be more relaxed about it!
