They were always short and 3 paragraphs; I let the resume do the talking, but that's me. The first paragraph would state the position and where I saw it. The second would highlight the points in the ad to my skills and the last would be a simple signoff.
For instance, if I was applying for the following job:
Job Description
Position available for a civil engineer/site designer at a Civil Engineering/Landscape Architecture firm that specializes in Office/Research Parks, Corporate Headquarters, Mixed-Use and Retail industries. Requirements:
Requires 3-5 years of experience relating to site design, drainage, utilities, grading and layout. AutoCAD and HydroCAD experience required. Pump station and water system experience preferred. P.E. not required.
I would write something like (doing this from memory at work):
I am writing to about your ad the Fayetteville Nosepicker Gazette for a Civil Engineer. I am interested in the position and would like to request an interview.
I have the following experience: * Over 5 years experience with site design, drainage, utilities, grading and layout. * Experience with AutoCAD and HydroCAD * Knowledge of pump station and water systems
Attached is my resume and I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
I had a couple more sentences in it, but you get the idea. Good luck.
