the * whenever someone in DU refers to bush? what's that supposed to mean?

2. The asterisk denotes illegitemacy.
He's not really the president, so we need that to be clearly marked the way a textbook might mark an anomolous occurence in history.

3. There are a few theories to the origins of that.
One is that the * will forever mark W's presidency as a footnote detailing that he was an unelected president.

Others point to Doonesbury.

There are a few other ideas I'm sure somebody else will post.

5. Two things:
1> * means a denotation where he was a president who lost the popular vote yet won the presidency.

2> * means a denotation where he was appointed by the supreme court (I'm trying not to editorialize because I'd whip up a storm against the SCOTUS...).

8. Since he was appointed, and not elected, DUers put a * next to his name,

which, over time, has devolved into the simple "*." It symbolizes his illegitimacy, is a lot easier to type, and it's a lot less mentally stressful to not fully acknowledge that ass**** as our pResident. (That's another word you see on DU -- *, the phoney resident of the White House = "pResident".)

10. I also like the Vonnegut-inspired origins
* looks like a certain orifice (it was well illustrated in "Breakfast of Champions"). It's a perfect nickname.
