in the past, unless it was something from or made by my kids (you know those hand painting ornaments they always make in daycare and school) i never thought an ornament was a particularly special gift. i like to decorate in my own style :-)
however, recently i have had reason to pay more attention to the hallmark ornaments and they really offer a vast array of choices - i think you could find something for everyone/anyone. and, if you have any of the recipients offer you a "polite" thank you, you could tell them to leave it in the box for a couple of years and it will become a collectible. i've recently acquired a few older "mint in box" hallmark ornaments that would in no way enhance my particular christmas tree - so i've put them away in a place my kids can find them after i die to boost the profits at the estate sale ;-)
the problem with ornaments as gifts is that they generally are not good until next year. if you open the gift on christmas, sure, you can put it on the tree, but it is really past the tree decorating excitement.
so, yes, i think it's a good idea. but if i got a hallmark ornament as a gift from my aunt/cousin i would probably put it away forever as a collectible. (if it were from my sister, it would probably go in the christmas box until next year and then go on the tree, because hey! - my sister knows me and my christmas tree, and she would only get it for me if she knew it was perfect ;-) )
