So I had a truly brilliant idea tonight.... (Cut my own hair!)
I needed a haircut and I thought "Hey, why should I go to the barber and get it cut? For $10 I can buy my own razor and cut my own hair!"

Yeah..

So, um, that's $10 down the drain.

Hair-tastrophe.

3. Alas, he ran into the shower to get the itchy hair off of him
I didn't get a pic of the full self-imposed hatchet job, but I'll see what I can do...

Parroty expression...

Looking...guilty, of *something*...(and the messy kitchen shelf)

Top of the head, note the uneven lengths...

6. Thank you for posting the pics

The last time I "cut" my hair myself I was 6 years old. The weekend before I had my first day at school

15. It's fixable, but that shit's gonna be REALLY short
I cut my own hair, and it looks pretty good when I'm done.

In this case you're going to have to do it. Look at the guards--the little combs that hook onto the clippers. They should be numbered, and usually the numbers are 1/8" increments: a #1 cuts to 1/8", a #2 to 1/4" and so on. Pick the #3 and sit him down. Preferably with his shirt off.

All you need do is hold the teeth of the guard flat against his head and push up through the hair he has left. You go from the outside in and don't cut more than halfway across his head at any one pass...because once you go past halfway, it won't cut anymore. Keep on doing this, brushing the hair out of the clippers after every pass, until no more hair comes off.

If it's still uneven after you cut with the #3, you may have to go to the #2. I don't think you will, though.

If you REALLY want to get it perfectly even, cut his hair with no guard on the clippers, then shave his head bald. Assuming he doesn't like a smooth head enough to continue shaving it, it'll grow in very evenly.

2. Let me be the first to say...

This is a lesson I think everyone has to learn the hard way. Your hair was in 47 different lengths, sticking up at odd angles like the fuzz on a baby duck. I have done what I could to even it up, but it'd take a pro to do it right...

4. I've been doin' mine for years
Never used a razor, though. Just scissors.

The keys are to start with a good, professional cut, and never cut more than about 1/2 inch at a time.

9. Back's tricky
I put a mirror on the bathroom door to help that, so I can see the back in the basin mirror while looking into the door mirror.

With the top, I kind of draw imaginary lines where it should fall, then gauge and cut accordingly.

I dunno how to splain it better'n that.

When I used to get it professionally cut (I still do once in awhile), I'd watch how the stylist did it. Just takes some practice; you've gotta fuck it up first before you learn to do it right.

20. having a spouse or SO do it is best,if you can...
my wife won't do it, so i usa combination of feeling the length in back with my fingers, and turning my head as faaaaar as i can each way, while using the tri-fold mirror on the medicine cabinet to see as far around the event horizon of my noggin' as possible.

same here tho- all i ever use to cut with are scissors.

8. Haircut Classes
Barbers cut their own hair. I know two that do. Maybe there should be a self-help haircut forum.

10. Hint

I did this recently. Just used the longest guard and went at it. My wife freaked out at the first pass when I took over an inch off. It turned out pretty good when it was all done though.

Nice!
Got none on top.
Just the monk's fringe.
Almost pure silver now.
I just zip it once a week or so.

19. i've been cutting my own hair for a couple decades now...
it started out as a way to save money for pot...and over time i just got used to doing it.

don't worry- it gets easier each time. what works best is if you have a tri-fold bathroom mirror, and a decent pair of SHARP scissors.

23. I cut my own hair when I'm too lazy...
(or cheap) to see my hairstylist. However, I have thick wavy/curly hair so I can get away with it (Sort of. At least, I like to think so.)

I would not try it if I had straight hair.

However, your experiment looks like it can be easily repaired, Everything. Fortunately, hair does grow back!
