Poll question: I'm thinking about dying my hair. Any advice?
Edited on Fri Dec-08-06 01:38 PM by LeftyMom
I don't want to go lighter at all, and my hair has to be a natural hair color (not my natural color, just one that occurs on human heads) for work, so I can't dye it purple or anything (not that I really want to anyhow.)

This is my natural hair color. (It took me ages to find a pic where my hair was not tied back- this is a year old but I look the same.)

Any thoughts?

1. do a reverse streak--put in some darker streaks
and just a couple of lighter ones around the face :hi:

2. I used to color my hair in my 20's... never liked it...
I recommend highlights... you'd look very pretty with some copper or red-hued highlights. Maybe two-toned. :hi:

4. Either a dark auburn, or auburn streaks.
Something subtle and natural looking, but with a bit of fire to it. :7

so I can't think of anything that it could benefit from.

8. I would assume you'd want something animal friendly so, I'd suggest just a bit of henna--
Not enough that you'd get too much red but just a lovely auburn cast. It would flatter your skin tone.

11. Definitely.
I use a henna shampoo now, but it doesn't seem to be doing much good.

I can order vegan dye or probably buy some locally at the food co-op. I'd never consider it if I had to use a animal-tested/animal product dye. :)

13. Henna shampoo helps the texture, but doesn't really change the color.
(Unless you're blond, perhaps.) I've been using Avigal Henna for some time & like it.

But here's where the real experts hang out: www.hennaforhair.com/

10. Ohhh! Highlights!
They're especially great to have in winter; they really make you feel like your appearance is brightened up. You'd better post pics when you get something done!

14. How about shaving it?
A nice bare head will really change your look. It may also give you a greater appreciation for your naturally beautiful hair.

17. Just do henna.
You'll get beautiful red highlights, and your hair will be stronger, thicker, and shinier. It's a freaking mess to put on, but it's all-natural. You can get henna hair dye at any "whole foods" type place with a health and beauty section, and you can get it at Lush too.

18. I downloaded your picture and played with it in Photoshop
If that picture is true to color, your hair is extremely dark brown. The only way you're going to be able to color it and have the work be noticeable is if you lighten it.

I tried it two ways. First, I lightened your hair a little, and it looked good.

Then I left it the way it is and made your lips a dark wine color. That looked a lot better.

If you want the two images, send your e-mail address and I'll be happy to oblige.

So...leave your hair alone and wear a dark wine lipstick.

20. Actually, with your skin tone
some lighter highlights or streaks would look fabulous. But not too light.

But, hey — it's your hair. You can abuse it as you wish. :P

22. Note to self:
Looking through personal collection of LeftyMom's pics to provide feedback on hair color can be very, VERY distracting.

Not. saying. why.

30. It's a euphemism. Like how nudist resorts and nude beaches are "clothing optional"

It sounds better than "bare assed (and boobed) naked." :D

29. Why are you dying your hair if you dont want to change your color???
I was once a licensed cosmetologist... If you want to just make it shinier with a few highlights - use a dark or medium ash blonde (not loving care as it has no peroxide and wont do squat unless you go darker) with your complexion this would work well for you and the "ash" combats the red molecules that come up in the lightening process. Or you could use henna for reddish highlights that aren't permanent if you dont like them. But what I think would really compliment you is simply bleaching the front part of your hairline blonde which gives you the option of using temporary color (green, blue or purple if you're in the mood) and you can always go back to a traditional shade if you want to blend in with the drones.. Your hair is a gift - use it to express yourself!

Not so worried about impressing guys though, I have one and I seem to impress him no matter what. He's pretty great himself. :D

I think those colors would work very well with your skin tone.
