Many here poo poo the idea of abstinence, but it IS the only 100% effective method of avoiding pregnancy and STDs.

I agree that many people here laugh at the idea of remaining virgin, as if it were some crazy fundie thing to do. Really pisses me off. :grr:

I fear dying of AIDS so intensely sometimes that I'd be willing to kill myself before becoming involved with anyone whose sexual history I was not intimately aware of.

What is important when you are dating is discernment, because people will lie, lie, lie. I feel so strongly about this that I don't think you should trust anyone...but that's just me, I'm jaded. Unless you are around them 24 hours a day their entire life you don't know what their sexual history is. It's scary out there.

What we think is stupid is trying to teach abstinence as the ONLY thing and require that nothing else even be known about. THAT'S what doesn't work. Abstinence is just another choice and it's hard to make an informed choice when you don't know what the alternatives are.
