The many times they run those damn commercials makes me think they are trying to implant that idea in every man's mind.

While some men DO have problems with ED, the commercials make it seem as if 95% of men over 40 have it.

And that is exactly what they WANT to do -- create the "need" for their drugs.

Not saying that all drugs are bad or unnecessary. If one is at a certain level, and needs drugs for something, then so be it. But to CREATE the need, feh! Pisses me off. Friggin' assholes, indeed. :grr:

'failure to launch' is a disease that requires pharmaceutical intervention. ED is obviously a real and traumatic thing, but it seems the drug companies are trying to do an end run around the physicians (as they have with many other illnesses) to try and build up a demand among patients for whom the treatment really isn't necsssary... (IM_uninformedO, of course.)

just so they can push their pills and potions.

Having said that, I will reiterate that I do think there is a place for medication (I have three pills a day I need to take), but the marketing the drug companies do does seem to be geared toward creating more users, as opposed to being a solution for a problem one already has.

even at my advanced age, I find those commercials to be somewhat amusing.

I don't need it anymore (the soldier salutes just fine)but for a time it was a god send.
It really screws with a mans head when the soldier doesn't cooperate..It aint no kind of fun!
The commercials are sort of to much..Specially the Bob ones.

The issue for me is when drug companies seek to CREATE the problem, not just solve one.

nothing works like it used to. Life is more complex. Lists of things to do. Problems to take care of. Halfway through lovemaking my mind wanders and I might think, "Did I leave the lights on in the car?"

might have thought, prior to the commercials, that it was an inevitable part of life.

I have some experience dealing with it because my FIL, who lived with us had ED as a result of diabetes and a stroke. He and my husband had numerous conversations about his inability and my husband would relay the conversation to me indicating how sad it made his dad.

I know all the issues people have with Big Pharma advertising on TV, but I think it's a good thing.

Here's an interesting side note. My dad passed in 2004 from a combination of Alzheimer's and DM. At one time, we thought he might have NPH because of the way he shuffled so when he walked, but at the time, the only acceptable treatment was to implant a shunt and if he didn't have NPH, (neuropressurehydrocephalus), it would be all for naught.

THe week after he passed, I saw a commercial on tv for a drug to treat NPH and the guy talking about it shuffled exactly the same way as my dad. When my brother's MIL was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I brought this to his attention and it turned out she had NPH. Started taking the drug. All better.

My point is, as annoying as some of those commercials are, I think it gets the word out that there are therapies to help.

My FIL told my wife (his daughter) and i that his prescription for Viagra didn't include enough pills per month for his needs.

Public Relations firms are "firming" up their sales with undocumented data. I seriously doubt this to be true for the starting age of 40 perhaps 55. The sooner you can convince men that they might have a problem in this area at age 40 the more likely they will and probably not due to physical causes. To quote the tobacco industry "our product is doubt". I think you can research this area quite easily but self-disclosure on this issue is somewhat specious.
