ELGIN -- Twins Eric and Evan Gilmore wrote out their letters to Santa Claus last week. Grandma put stamps on the letters and mailed them, as she has in years before -- To Santa: North Pole.
However, grandma Nancy Teafoe was surprised when 4-year-old Eric's letter was returned Monday with the notation "Return to Sender, Insufficient Address, Unable to Forward."
"I remember in Miracle on 34th Street , when Santa was saved by a bag of letters to Santa," Teafoe said. "I think this is a little ironic."
But, with the help of Tim Ratliff, public affairs director for the U.S. Postal Service's Northern Illinois District, a copy of the letter has been placed in the hands of Santa's helpers.
Ratliff promised to search for Evan's letter as well, to make sure both boys' letters would be sent on to St. Nick and perhaps each would get a response from Santa.
When Teafoe contacted the Elgin Post Office about the returned letter, the person she spoke to asked that she bring the letter back and postal officials would ensure that it was handled properly. Teafoe wants to keep the original, however, for Eric's baby book.
She's sent very similar letters in the past, both for the twins and for their older brother Andy.
It's the postal service's policy to accept letters addressed to "Santa" and, depending where the letter is sent, reply to the letter.
The missed letter to Kris Kringle is a rarity, Ratliff said.
