23. Yeah, I think you're right....
Holland is too much like the Netherlands to be Germany. Damned if I can figure out why...

2. Well, I liked Munich a lot.
Spent a couple of months there one winter.
People were fairly friendly and the beer and food was good.

10. Stayed at the Hilton by the Englische Garden.
I was flying for TWA.
We used to run a 727 shuttle between Munich, Stuttgart, and Frankfort.
Didn't have to check out of my room when I was on a trip, so it was like having an apartment, but with maid and room service.
Pretty cool.

Didn't think a 727 could fly that far.

Travelling around Europe and southern Germany. I miss it, a Lot.

I missed whatever flame-war instigated the popcorn, though...

7. Munich was cool - nice people
And I had the greatest pizza ever in Berlin. Didn't have a chance to check out the clubs there, which are supposed to be good. Other than that I could take Germany or leave it.

Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 04:44 PM by JVS
;-)

You have to go to really understand. People seemed normal to me, but then again I was raised by a bunch of Midwesterners with German and Swedish backgrounds so maybe it would strike someone else as different.

14. I've been and I liked it very much.
I spent some time in St. Goar on the Rhine and in Munich and loved them both for different reasons. The Germans are pleasant people. There was a flamewar about this?

38. Did you go to Berg Rheinfels?
I played a concert there one night under a full moon with the wall as a backdrop. It was INCREDIBLE. Spent the afternoon running through the tunnels and around the perimeter with the kids. I could have sworn I heard muslin rustling and smelled road apples.

They speak the same language, too. So if you can speak German, you'll be understood in both places.

22. Koln (Cologne) is great...
great food, great beer (Kolsch), and a mix of old world Europe and modern Europe. The only thing is some of the older people are not the biggest fans of the US after we shelled the crap out of their city. We saved their largest cathedral..(only because it was a great landmark to visually guide our pilots onto military targets. There is a museum that shows in great detail how bad we destroyed the city. It's even more fun to go in winter and with someone who speak the language.

I've been to Munich, Schwabish Hall (my favorite and where my Nana grew up), Pfaffenhofen, Frankfurt, Balingen, Stuttgart, St. Georgan, Tubingen, Straubing, Rottweil, Schramberg, and Meersburg. Yeah, I had lots of family to visit. It was beautiful and I can't wait to go back.

31. Yes, in 1967, but I'm sure it's much different now
At that time, only 22 years after World War II, it was an attractive country with fantastic bakeries, cute villages, and insane drivers. The only sign of the war I saw was in the post office, where instead of wanted posters they had posters put up by people who were still seeking word of relatives who had gone missing.

We visited some relatives, and I remember thinking that their furniture and decor were kind of fussy.

33. I have been to Germany.
Specifically the Rhine region and down to Alsace. My description runs like this: Germany: hearty portions, good prices, sturdy benches to sit on. Impossible to follow road signs (if at all). France: tiny, highly decorative portions, high prices, spindly chairs. Good road signs.

34. Yes
I spent a week in Schleswig-Holstein a few years ago, with a couple of day trips into Hamburg & Berlin. Excellent public transit & rail, and riding the autobahn was a lot of fun. I'm headed back there next summer for a wedding. I have no idea what that will be like, but I am sure it will involve much alcohol.

35. I'll be the sourpuss
We had 3 tours there and I hated it so much I told my husband I would rather die than go back.

We were in Illesheim (near Rothenberg), Frankfurt and Kaiserslautern.
It wasn't the "overseas" part, I am from another country. I hated the damned weather. I was so cold and the skies were so gloomy. Most of the people were pretty nice and I speak fairly good German. The food was fine, I missed TV shows and family.

God, I feel depressed just thinking about it.

the pastry and confections are probably the best on this planet, the streets and shops are clean and the people are very friendly, if somewhat efficient to a fault.

40. Been to Germany 4 times
in the last 2 years. Munich (in the south) twice, Heidelburg (west central), and Hamburg. Last year went to Oktoberfest, and it was different than I expected. They had carnival type stuff there; I thought the only thing to do was get drunk. They had games where you could win a stuffed animal. Specifically throwing darts trying to pop balloons. However, considering how drunk people were...perhaps throwing darts isn't such a good idea! :yoiks:
