Small town entertainment--House fire by my place today PIX
Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 01:43 AM by Whoa_Nelly
It's an old abandoned, boarded up turn-of-the-century farmhouse where some homeless people hang out. It caught fire today and had the main artery into town closed for almost 5 hours. Am sure it's nothing but ash now..was a real tinderbox of an old place.
(...and I remember over 30 years ago when it was really out in the countryside from town, was called Animal House, and there were 30 ft. pot plants growing in the backyard...:hippie: )

By the time I found out it was burning and got over there, it was getting under control, and the roof was starting to cave, but I took some pics anyway:

(..and NO! I don't go chasing fires...as if Firemen do anything for me! Hah! )

7. Was thinking "insurance fire"
since it sits on prime property where all the big box stores are going up. But, the place is also known to be where a lot of homeless go at night, and have suspected it could also have been being used by local methheads.

Sent my photos to the local paper. Called them, and the editor told me to send'em in :-) Doubt mine will be used for the paper since they did have one of their cameras there, but am curious to follow up on the story once it's published.

8. That was my fav pic, too!
:loveya:

There weren't any ambulances at the scene, but since the road was blocked off for over 5 hours, am betting clean up is going to be a bitch. Thank dog it wasn't windy today! There's a lot of brush around that place.

I know this because I'm a moran! series111!11

a friend and I went to his land to dump some stuff in a pit and burn it. It was windy, the whole field was on fire in no time. This being about 25 years ago. Hopefully I'm a little smarter!

14. Hard To Hide Them When They Get To Be Like Trees!
had a roomate once that had a grow lite in the closet and had plants growing so he could transplant them in the forest somewhere. He'd leave the curtains open with the closet door open and the room light off and the grow light on!

I'd come home and freak out!

pretty funny today, but then I couldn't believe it

10. Around here there are many abandoned places
it's an old town...many old barns, and plenty of old boarded up houses around.

This town finally started to reclaim some of the architecture about 15 years ago, but it's slow going here.

15. It's Interesting That There Are So Many Homeless
meth heads?

just seems that small towns have fewer services and therefore are not likely to draw homeless people seeking social services to them.

6. was this a practice burn?
lots of departments get together and practice on old buildings due to be demolished anway.
they start it up, put it out; start it up again, put it out. Lotta young firefighters get trained and it makes way for something.
hope the homeless aren't getting gentrified out of town, by the way...

11. Nope, not a practice burn as far as I could tell
We have a small fire dept. here. Other units from neighboring towns came in to help.

Have seen practice burns around here, and this one didn't look like one, especially since it's located on one of the main roads into and out of this place. Really backed up traffic and clogged neighorhood streets in diverting traffic. If it had been a practice burn, would have been on a Sunday here...a slow day...and there would have been public notice.

16. UPDATE..and Hmmmph! My pics beat the hell outta the paper's photojournalist's
Here's the paper's photo

Story:
Flames engulf abandoned house

Fire gutted an abandoned house along Lacey Boulevard west of 12th Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

The century-old structure, located just west of the former Photo Express building, caught fire shortly before 3 p.m. on its second floor and flames quickly spread.

Officials responding to the scene suspect that juveniles may have set the fire. The abandoned house was a popular hangout for kids in the area.
