Tavernertot had a 103.2 F Temp last night
Poor little girl was burning up...we took her (back) to the docs this morning and they gave her new drugs.

High fevers always freak me out, because when they hit a certain temp in small kids brain damage can occur.

Anyway, her temp's down now. We gave her Ibuprofen (Tylenol wasn't doing the trick)

2. Poor kid - glad the temp is down
I know what you mean - and they can climb so high so fast, it's frightening. My son once had a fever of 104 and I was afraid he was going to have a seizure - he was beginning to twitch and jerk. It was terrifying and it had jumped up within hours. Very scary and there was a major thunderstorm happening - I finally put him in the car to rush him to the hospital (20 miles away - no ambulance service) and about halfway there, a tree came down right in front of us - felt the wind from it.

I had to go back but being out in the weather had dropped his temp and he was thankfully okay. One of the scariest nights I ever had, though.

Sorry for the digression - little ones and fevers always bring that one back.

4. Boy, that sure does freak you out, doesn't it?
When Little Bunny was a baby, she ran a fever that hit 104.5. I was out of town visiting my parents. This was on Christmas Eve, so no doctors were open. I called the ER at the local hospital, and the doctor in charge told me to come down - he gave me liquid Motrin (it was not available over the counter in those days, and in any case all stores were closed) and instructions for how to treat her. She got over it fairly quickly, as kids often do, but not before it added a few more gray hairs to my head!

Good luck with your little girl.

7. I started out my nursing career
working in Peds, and often we found that Ibuprofen was the more effective drug to help combat fever, hell I remember when I was a kid I used to get St. Joseph's Childrens Aspirin, I loved the taste of those things. Lucky I never developed Reye's Syndrome.

9. A trick our pediatrician taught us:
When a child's fever is very high and will not respond to Tylenol or Motrin alone, use them together. Give a dose of Motrin first, then 2-3 hours later give a dose of Tylenol, then 2-3 hours after that, another dose of Motrin. Since Tylenol (acetaminophen) is processed in the liver and Motrin (ibuprofen) is processed in the kidneys, staggering the doses like that won't overload your kid's system, but will work just about every time for bringing down a persistent high fever.

He told us not to keep it up for longer than 12 hours, though, and if there are any other symptoms (nausea, vomiting, rash, cough, etc.) take the kidlet to the doc to rule out something serious.

12. Never ice
tepid water, and a washcloth.

An ice bath would be too much of a shock to a young one's body that is still not good at regulating body temps.
