What painter am I thinking of?
His Name starts with D. He might be an impressionist. Or just someone who impressionists dig?

What's my name?

5. I was fantasizing
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 08:50 PM by votesomemore
what to do with my new kitchen walls since I got a white table and got rid of the old dark stuff. Monet came to mind and was trying to think of an Impressionist with D. I took art a long time ago. My ex-rm had an excellent Monet in the front room. It didn't go with any of the eclectic stuff we had.. except it did.

What do you suggest? I want to keep the walls clean. There are dark cabinets. But the white table just lights up the room. I want the light.

11. Impressionists bore me.

Every soccer mom from here to Timbuktu puts Monet in their house because it goes with the couch. The Impressionists have practically become a parody of the groundbreaking art they once were.

I'm much more fond of Chagall for his beautiful use of mood and excitement, or Kandinsky for his amazing use of color. If you got a white table and want to lighten up the room, either of these guys could do amazing things to brighten your kitchen and make a splash at the same time. Does it have to be figurative art, or are you willing to experiment a bit?

Or some fun, goofy Botero....(I heard these described as "pneumatic" people once. Always makes me giggle.)

But if you really want that kid of look, even Cezanne is more interesting...

16. Oh, and I don't know how I forgot to mention one of my favorites...
Arshile Gorky.

I'll find any excuse to post "Liver is the Cock's Comb" because it's such an awesome work:

17. Either Seurat...
(note the spelling) or possibly Manet's Dejeuner sur L'Herbe (Luncheon on the Grass). Did it have ladies that were nekkid or wearin' dresses? ;-)

2. If it's someone the Impressionists admired,
perhaps you are thinking of

Delacroix?

12. Andre Derain?
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 08:55 AM by Bridget Burke
Hardly likely, as he's considered a Post Impressionist.

But I'm always glad for an excuse to mention his "The Turning Road"--in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston's permanent collection. It's a huge painting.

You can get a closer look here, but the colors are quite washed out. (Lots of good stuff here.)

18. You're welcome....
Reading about art, watching educational TV about art & catching traveling shows are well & good. But having art in a local museum, where you can see it again & again, is the best way to "appreciate" it.

The MFAH had a Rothko show some years back. Powerful stuff, ending with the dark paintings done toward the end of his life. (His final works are in Houston's Rothko Chapel; after finishing them, he opened his veins.) After seeing that show, the Impressionist & PostImpressionist collection removed my dark thoughts of doom & destruction. (A sandwich from the snack bar helped.)

So I just re-upped at the MFAH: www.mfah.org/main.asp?target=home

And I'd already signed up here. (Santa was good.) www.menil.org/

Support your local museums! If you can't, find out when they have "free" days & drop by.
