Fuck -- my tooth hurts
Going to the dentist tomorrow to see what's going on but ... damn, this is nasty. Apologies in advance for anyone I bitch at tonight -- I'm in a crappy mood.

14. Should be ok...
I've done that, too. But it may not help much if your broken tooth is in contact with a nerve. Oil of clove can help, if you have it handy. Gosh I hope you're better soon. Just reading about your pain is making my teeth hurt in sympathy!

5. You probably don't have this on hand, but... Clove oil
From the Atlanta Dental Group:
http://www.atlantadentist.com/clove_oil_toothache_relief.html

<snip>
Clove oil toothache relief has been used for centuries. The oil soothes tooth pain and has the characteristic smell that many older dental offices used to have. Dentists mix the oil with zinc oxide to make a white temporary filling material that calms tooth pain down. This soothing temporary filling is used to replace a dental filling in a tooth that is hurting with the hopes that the tooth will calm down enough to later have a permanent filling without the need for a root canal.

Most pharmacies sell small bottles of the oil or patients can buy commercial temporary filling materials containing clove oil. Another name for clove oil is eugenol. It can be placed on a small piece of cotton and stuck into a tooth cavity to give temporary clove oil toothache relief. This can be effective for 60 to 90 minutes. A new cotton ball soaked with clove oil can replace the old one at this time.

10. You can use it on cotton
Toothache is still effectively treated with cloves as the eugenol in the spice has both analgesic and antiseptic qualities. A bruised clove or some clove oil on cotton wool is held in the mouth near the tooth. Some dentists still use cloves to disinfect ailing root canals and mix clove oil with zinc oxide for temporary fillings.

15. My teeth have been hurting on and off for the last two months or so
It has caused me hours of discomfort and unbearable pain and has caused problems with my eating as well from time to time. I'm going to have dental surgery next month to fix the problems and, while I hate surgery on the one hand, I can hardly wait to have my teeth fixed.

22. You can get temporary filling stuff to relieve the pain tonight, called
Dentemp, Temparin or Refilit, at any good drug store, next to the toothpaste. It will help a lot until you can see the dentist. When it hardens (about 1 hour after you put it in) you can even eat normally. It has saved me from a lot of pain.

23. Couldn't find it, but the clove oil seems to be working
At least it hurts a bit less. I think the tooth is cracked right down the middle, so I don't know if a temp filling will do it.

24. I'm completely phobic about the dentist.
Honestly. I never go until I am in EXCRUCIATING pain. I know it's a bad idea, and that I need to take care of my teeth, but I just don't care until it REALLY HURTS.

So, I have some idea what you're going through. I wish you well.

25. Having a tooth hurt is different from having, say, a leg hurt. Don't know why.
Maybe because it's closer to your brain?

Anyway, my sympathy. Toothaches are NO fun.

or ice it, etc, etc... With a tooth you just have to take it.

27. My sympathies jgraz.
I had a number of horrid toothaches when I was growing up, and they are absolutely no fun. Hopefully the dentist can figure out what's going on AND give you something to relieve the pain.

31. Speaking of dentists
I had a dentist tell me to brush very hard, and that it was healthy for my gums to bleed when I did it. Well, recently I decided to use some of my insurance for a neglected dental visit (another dentist in another city, though). The hard brushing had damaged my gums and wouldn't let them heal. My eighty-eights were slightly loose because of it. Luckily, they firmed up again with the healing.

So if you live in Seattle, beware of the dental clinic at Broadway and Pine. Though with the turn over in dentists, the bad one I had is probably long gone.
