How many of us are IT workers?

I've been in IT for 20 years now (sigh...), started out with COBOL and other such shite in the banking and insurance industries.

Was a consultant/code whore for a long time before becoming an employee again.

For about the past 8 years I've developed internet-based Quality Assurance software for the defense and aerospace industry in a Windows environment using Borland's Delphi (Pascal), Oracle and SQL Server.

The other 50 is spent with PHP, MySQL, Ruby on Rails, Python, Django, CSS, and XHTML.

around maintaining systems and coding though. Many platforms over the years, and many different languages,both categories have more than their fair share of offbeat members (Ataris, Amigas, Modula-2, Oberon-2, assembly, etc.)

Though there is a little Netware in one part of the company that I deal with occasionally.

I've been a developer, a tester, a DBA, all around the product. The funny thing is, I went to school for business and wanted to go into marketing. Some days I'm still not really sure how I got into this line of work, and then I remember: it was because there weren't any jobs for new MBA's in marketing anywhere near where I lived when I got out of school. Oh well - work to live, not live to work.

I use AutoCad, SolidWorks, Excell, Gibbs software to
force metal to do what I want.

and have not gotten solidworks back on yet

be Windows XP SP2 which is our corporate standard - but there is a ton of software to reload, including SolidWorks, and its a much bigger deal to reinstall than most software is. There are a bunch of service paks for SolidWorks too. Our company makes the huge diesel engines that go on ships and submarines.

I want to play with the fun network stuff

plants in 22 countries. Do a real mixed bag of IT functions since I am the only IT person in my business unit at my facility (conveniently located in the middle of nowhere). Do security and backup support on a very old mainframe app with 8,000 COBOL and assembler programs; write, maintain and compile "rules" for data access in ACF2. HW and SW support on desktop, servers, printers, network equipment. Have worked in CIS/MIS for many types of organizations, manufacturers, telcom, large retailer, edu, gov. Have been a Novell CNE (v 3 thru 6) for about 15 years but haven't worked with NetWare for about 5 years; CWNA, Cisco CCNP & CCDP.

32 years now, about half of that in the DoD world. I do mostly C, C++ and Java. .NET kinda makes my skin crawl for reasons I can't quite determine.

...in the Navy. Started out as an NT Admin and worked by way up.

DBA on the side.

I've programmed with Oracle databases for eight and a half years. Mostly PL/SQL and Forms, and at my previous job I used Oracle Pro*C also. So I also know C although I don't get to do that at my current job. I also have a working knowledge of Java.

I live in the VB Scripting world, and I work for a huge bank, (think of what a dog does to a squirrel). The bank sucks the soul right outta me, but I'm only here for another week. Then, its back to the insurance industry...

we still do shite for the insurance industry, in Cobol and equally archaic languages/systems.

We are porting many of the applications to the Web, and even I, old mossback that I am (programmer since 1980) have done some of that work. But our server is still an IBM mainframe-- running DOS/VSE, the red-headed stepchild of operating systems. (My previous jobs were all VM/CMS, which I prefer.)

I myself am more of a Luddite who is always confused by the task bar and what everything there is called and does. The only fun thing for me about going to the Mac store was looking at the cute geek guys.

in a foodservice warehousing firm. Great place to work, and my boss is a DUer as well, so we have interesting conversations in our office. Maybe that's why they stuck us all the way down the hall, it can't just be the noisy fans in the server racks! :D

We build all our PC's and servers in-house (and even build barebone laptop kits) so I've always got something neat cooking...
