Justin Timberlake: "Sexy Back"
I dunno, but I think the music (and the video) are a little lame. I think he's trying too hard, if you ask me. You be the judge. :P

He seemed to be implying a French Assassin thang.

5. it's definitely
a 'shakin your thang on the dance floor' kind of song.

It always makes me think of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album for some reason. Like,

Don't Stop til You Get Enough and songs like that, I guess because it has a disco sound to it.

6. Now that's just FUN!
Maybe Justin needs to start getting plastic surgery so he can look like MJ's dark, freakish clone. ;)

Kidding! :hi:

7. It's brilliant marketing
Filling a need that no one knew was there. Who knew sexy was in decline?* Regardless, here comes Timberlake to reassure an anxious public that they no longer have to go without sexy, because he's got enough for everybody. It's very canny.

*In fact, leading sexy indicators haven't budged in six months, and sexy as a proportion of GDP has seen year-on-year growth.

9. You have to think of JT's music as club music.
Edited on Thu Jan-04-07 11:14 AM by janesez
It's not meant to be played on the radio. It's meant to dance your ass off to. The bass line, the insistent chorus, it's totally infectious. The lyrics are unimportant. When you're in a club and this comes on, you will shake your ass, that is guaranteed.

13. You are right and I love the song and the album.
Everytime I hear it I dance my ass off, particularly at clubs. Honestly, it's one of the best songs to dance to in a long time.

21. Bah. If I'm in a club and Daft Punk comes on, I'll dance...
if Justin Timberlake comes on, I'll get a few shots of whiskey and sweat a while on a barstool.

Like I said downthread, J.T.'s new album is the record James Brown would have done had he been a virgin.

28. Oh, I don't know.
I think people from "our" generation (I'm using that term because we seem to be from the same era music-wise, according to the other thread) tend to dismiss new pop music because we think it's weak. However, I know I was dancing my ass off to Michael Jackson back then (maybe you weren't). I've always liked pop music, and I think Justin Timberlake does it very well.

When his first album came out, a rapper (can't remember if it was Method Man or Redman) said, "If you say you ain't like Timberlake's new record, you lyin'." Hee!

31. I think his first album, Justified, was ok.
I don't know if we're the same generation. Probably pretty close, but I was in first grade or so when Thriller came out.

And while I dig music of the 70s and 80s, I gotta stay up on the new stuff. It's my job (I write a music column for a livin').

As far as new music is concerned, I gave Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood album of the year cred for 2006. But Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Neil Young were also on my Top 10, so what the hey.

17. See, I just don't get the same vibe from Justin as I did George.
I think it's because George's song told a story, or at least tried to.

Here's Justin:

I'm bringing sexy back. Sexy back. SEX! Yeah, babe. Sexy back. Oh yeah.....

Then: :nuke:

23. I have to admit
I've always found it ridiculous that he is a sex symbol. Probably the folks that were his age or younger when he broke are probably the ones that feel that way. To me he still looks like an overgrown kid, like Doogie Howser with a beat box or something. So it is a little ridiculous for him to be singing the lyrics "I'm bringing sexy back..."; you're like "back"? LOL.

But hey, it's got a great beat and you can dance to it. And you are right, the song doesn't really go anywhere. It kind of reminds me of Britney's "Toxic".

And I have to say, this does more for me, and I'm the most heterosexual woman on the planet! The music and the video are much more interesting than Justin.

26. That song isn't entirely bad, I must admit...
It's simple, but effective.

Though when it comes to onscreen kissing, Olivia Newton-John did it better in "Physical" (1981)

Edited on Thu Jan-04-07 01:45 PM by Writer
here's what I got from this video:

Sweatband - Check
Horrible leotards - Check
Aerobics with a room of sweaty fat guys - Check
The sudden appearance of oiled male dancers - Check
Two of the oiled male dancers walking away together, holding hands - Check (progressive for 1981, if I may say so myself)
Man who looks like Carrot Top on steroids - Check

I dunno. This one was a little gross to me.

27. yes
I was a big Alias fan so I loved that video. I don't understand Justin's appeal at all. I guess because he looks so young he should be illegal. You know, it's really strange, but back when I was growing up, a song like this (Sexyback) would have been sung by someone like Prince. It's weird that someone so middle class/scrubbed clean has the kind of sex symbol status Justin does.
