48. Hmmm.. wouldn't expect that.
The nastiest pits I've ever seen are definitely hardcore shows. A Fugazi concert comes to mind, and a multiple-band lineup that included Sick of it All. But I believe a Bad Religion concert I attended takes the cake for most horrific pit I've seen. It was my first concert, if you don't include concerts attended with parents as a child. Some poor schmuck next to me took a knee to the face and shattered his nose. Terrible, terrible ... I still think about it when I see a good pit.

50. Well, they WERE known for causing riots in Scotland.
Most intense pits I've seen:

Ministry
Primus (? Surprised the shit out of me, but I broke a rib in that pit)
Jesus & Mary Chain
Suicidal Tendencies

Fugazi was never too heavy because Ian would stop playing in the middle of a song and yell at people for moshing if there were girls there. Since I am a girl, I'm not sure what it would have been like with an all-guy audience - maybe he wouldn't have cared?

Bad Brains was quite a heavy pit back in the day. Anthrax. White Zombie. Several oi! bands whose names escape me.

53. Yeah. Ian was always a bit of a stick in the mud.
I saw him stop a show because some kid was talking on a cell phone, pull out $5, hand it to the kid, and tell him to get the fuck out.

Forgot about Primus. They were fucking brutal. Rage Against the Machine could get ugly too ... but not for long. Once the frat boys started actually getting hurt, they'd calm down. Not so for Primus fans.
