24. In terms of stand-up work, Wanda Sykes
Paula Poundstone
Elayne Boosler

I see Lily Tomlin more as a terrific sketch actress.

11. I'm for Carol Burnett.

I loved the warmth of her humor.

And frankly, today, I am incredibly excited to hear that Whoopi is back on stage doing tours. I can't wait to hear what she has to say.

People will object, but I think Joan Rivers is hysterical.

Lucille Ball did "women's slapstick" at a level no one ever matched.

So, no. Can't give it to Lily Tomlin. She's very talented, but to be honest, I don't always like her humor. I bought a video of hers once, and I think I ended up turning it off.

I would add that I'm not a big fan of Ellen DeGeneres, either. I'd rather see Margaret Cho. She's over the edge, and I think that's part of what I like about her.

20. She's just a bag of hot air
let's see how long she's around before saying she can be considered in the same league as Lily

9. I think the best comedienne, past or present, is Tracy Ullman.
She had a TV show for a while and has made a few mediocre films, but she has a tremendous range of abilities. She can do any number of accents and can do any form of comedy from slapstick to subtle British humor.

I love Lucy, Carol Burnett and Lily Tomlin. But I think that Tracy Ullman is the absolute best. The sad part is that there are far too many people who don't even know who she is.

12. I loved her TV show.
One skit that I always remember is at the bus stop, when her character gets everyone singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" before ripping them off.

I wonder how many people remember that The Tracey Ullman show was the birthplace of the Simpsons.

Her character, Lauren, is funny too;

18. What an era that was: Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett, Madeline Khan.
I won't see a triumvirate like that again in my lifetime, I'm fairly certain.

17. Mitch Hedberg was so good
that I give him best comedian and comedienne honors, despite the fact that doing so is completely illogical. I just loved that dude.

19. Not even close
Damned talented woman, but Brett Butler absolutely shreds me. Renders me a helpless pool of liquid Oedi on the floor.

And another one who did stand-up some years ago, Carrie Snow. Good lord and a quarter, that woman was FUNny!

Note to those mentioning Lucille Ball: I'm one of the biggest "I Love Lucy" fanatics you'll ever find, but I don't consider her a comedienne in the sense of "doing comedy." Rather, she's a "comic actress." Lucy couldn't do stand-up or much of anything without writers, but she had an innate sense of what's funny in sketch comedy equalled perhaps only by Carol Burnett.

Bette Midler was pretty damned funny, as well.
