2. I got REAMED on here a few years ago when I mentioned
that I couldn't get DSL in my neighborhood, but that I seemed to be able to access wireless on the rare occasions when I brought home my work laptop.

Was basically compared to Ken Lay, Dick Cheney and Mussolini....

6. I share my wireless network with anyone who can access it.
My computer is protected, and the likelihood of a 1337 h@x0r living next door is very low.

9. Yeah, something like that.
People who spell like that on purpose are usually dumbasses anyhow.

3. Some people leave their wireless open on purpose...
... but it's not always a nice purpose!

I have seen apartment buildings that offer free wireless, as a perk, and as a way to keep people from mucking about with wires.

The open connections in my own neighborhood seem to be controlled by kids.

Sure, I'll set that up, Dad!

4. ironflange posting on his old laptop
A Compaq Armada M700, with a PIII! I added some memory and switched it to Kubuntu Linux, and it's going like crazy now. I'm a good boy, using our wireless network. It's only there for the two laptops, the four bedrooms are all wired together. Bright boy here strung the network cables when the house was being built; works better than wireless. I can see three unsecured wireless networks from here, two of them named "Default." I'll have a look around sometime. . .

Mrs. Ironflange is on the "good" laptop (a Dell, ooooh!), playing a dumb Russian jigsaw puzzle game.

How's it going, tuff guy? Long time no see! How's the weather?

10. Have DSL now, and feel somewhat safer
It took a while before it was available where I live, even though I'm in a densely populated area.
