Don't use Linux
To get my digital camera to work, I have to ask questions like this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=2571548#post2571548

That is me. I mean FFS, really. :eyes:

1. What distro are you running??
I had probs with Suse 10.1 reading my digital camera- a Sharp Exilim. I downloaded and installed Ubuntu, and voila! Like a champ.

2. Slackware 11.0
One thing I am not going to do is distro-hop until it works. I don't do that any more. I want to understand why this fucker doesn't work properly.

Plus, reinstalling is such a pain in the arse.

3. That's why I use VMWare...
...I stick with one distro, but I do admit to trying several. When I find one that's better than what I'm currently using, I'll switch. Curiously enough, as popular as Slack is, I've never actually installed it. Gentoo neither.

4. Thanks for the heads up!
So far maybe I've just been lucky. I plug the digital camera in, and there it is.

5. Odd. Any digital cam with removable media worked fine in SuSE 10.1, 10.2, et al...
of course, I use a memory card reader, but most Linux distros (Linuii?) should see the camera AS a drive... ?

6. Not all cameras operate as USB mass storage devices
That would make it quite simple if it did. Instead I have to use libgphoto2. It used to work ok using Hotplug, but they removed Hotplug from the kernel in version 2.6.11. It took me the longest time to figure that out. Now you have to use Udev instead, which is what I'm trying to work out.

9. Can be a pain-in-the-ass when you need to add a feature. I agree about
distro hopping however. Once you have spent countless hours getting one to conform to your liking it's a real drag starting from scratch.

My dad loved to tinker with the family car even though it ran perfect for everyone else. I'm that way about my computer. Of course, his tinkering frequently resulted in our family using the city bus. I have a Windows machine I turn on for email and essentials when that happens to me.
