Early MTV and YouTube
I'm enjoying my trip in the Wayback Machine.

I present Erica's greatest hits from when MTV used to show videos:

Lords of the New Church -- Russian Roulette
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyV1qTQ29BM

Kraftwerk -- We are the Robots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-FtZYBVDbs

Missing Persons -- Mental Hopscotch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzH8i6EPm-A

Chris Deburgh -- Don't Pay the Ferryman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvHhngeD2K8

Paul Young -- Come Back and Stay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsQ77e5VL4Q

The Alarm -- The Stand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1Z9uyWIH_I

Utopia -- Feet Don't Fail Me Now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IDEMzGbMv4

Krokus -- Screaming in the Night (whatever did I used to see in this one -- it's worth of Spinal Tap!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chRJWbN88AA

A two-fer from Madness
One Step Beyond
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSBaugTVPzA
House of Fun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAu8iftAOEU

Some more recent fare that I also love:

Tori Amos -- Silent All These Years
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTwnNLXp33c

New Order -- True Faith
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcunLqxHDWU

Siouxsie and The Banshees -- Peek-A-Boo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj4n3svo-us

David Bowie -- Ashes to Ashes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r44OFO-MNPo

Split Enz -- One Step Ahead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTRFVNyu4nc

Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians -- Balloon Man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWuq6i2uQX0

and finally

Daft Punk -- Around the World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUoUpLMfngA

Enjoy.

2. Once upon a time, it happened.
It was utopia.

Then the corporations with their homogenized artists got wind of it. No more Siouxie Sioux, Adam & the Antz, Blotto or Captain Sensible. You only saw Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates and Michael Jackson 24-7.

Then, Remote Control. Count this silly abomination as the beginning of the end. Advertisers realized they could hold the viewer's attention longer with a 30-minute program as opposed to blocks of videos that the viewer, should they not like it, would potentially turn off.

Then, The Real World. The end. Period. MTV became The Sound of Random 20-Nothing Comedy Acts Bitching At Each Other. When they weren't doing that, they played absolutely NOTHING but hip-hop videos.

I mean, would it kill them to play a goddamned PRIMUS song once in a while?

3. Yes, yes it would kill them
That's why we must endure Real Rules whatever. But maybe a few deaths would be worth it to rid us of that.

11. Whoa. Welcome to the eighties!
I believe this is the first time I've ever watched that and not broken out into hysterical laughter. (The probable reason being I'm not stoned out of my mind right now, dammit.)

It's actually not a BAD song, and the video is really kinda cool, in a Timothy Leary sort of way....

I'm not sure if the last one was on MTV or not but I do remember seeing it on VH1

These videos rock!! It's too bad the KLF isn't around because thisis music, not the processed, plastic shit we hear now.

...that 'Video Killed the Radio Star' was the first video ever shown on MTV. I've also heard it was 'Money for Nothing' by Dire Straights.

18. It was indeed "Video Killed the Radio Star."
MTV had already been around for several years before "Money for Nothing" came out.

If you can find me anywhere to acquire or even listen to The Lilac Time's Return to yesterday, I'd owe you fucking huge.

And it rained
Like a slow divorce
And I wish
I could ride a horse

Eat that, Walt Whitman!
