13. First he bought his dog some eggs,
next thing I knew, he was aiming his car at cats and hunting with the vice president!

It all happened so fast...

17. I am. I was keeping the focus on the positive: the wine, and that
though someone saw fit to kill an animal, for whatever reason the animal won't go to waste. I know Robb lives in the frozen friggin north, and sometimes, that's how shit is done out there.

I'm vegan, and I think that it sucks an animal is dead. However, if folks that eat meat are going to see that a dead animal isn't wasted, then so be it.

It was also kinda sarcasm.

21. One of my favorite skits ever!!
"Dinosaurs are thin at one end; much, much bigger in the middle, and then thin again at the other end. That is my theory."
"That's it, is it?"
"...and it's mine."

7. I hope your neighbor doesn't have dogs --
because of the consequences of Dogs in Elk:

Anne V - 01:01pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1318 of 1332) Okay - I know how to take meat away from a dog. How do I take a dog away from meat? This is not, unfortunately, a joke.

AmyC - 01:02pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1319 of 1332) Um, can you give us a few more specifics here?

Anne V - 01:12pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1320 of 1332) They're inside of it. They crawled inside, and now I have a giant incredibly heavy piece of carcass in my yard, with 2 dogs inside of it, and they are NOT getting bored of it and coming out. One of them is snoring. I have company arriving in three hours, and my current plan is to 1. put up a tent over said carcass and 2. hang thousands of fly strips inside it. This has been going on since about 6:40 this morning.

I'm not much of a game eater, but moose is really delicious.

18. Elk is good for you
very lean. Not as game-y as venison.

Cabellas sells slim jims made out of elk (they're not as good for you). Very tasty, but very expensive.

20. Oh, man oh man
An update: 'twas amazingly well marinated, even just for an hour or so, quickly grilled, and tender and delightful as anything I've ever eaten. It's some little "secret cut" (he said) near the ribs. It's the only bit he eats the day of, as some kind of test to see how the rest of the thing is going to be. Again, amazing. Even he said it was one of the two best he's ever eaten. Also told me it was the quickest, cleanest shot he's ever had -- and if you believe his stories, he's one hell of a hunter. Actually, I've had meat of his before, and been damn impressed. No gamey-ness whatsoever.

His 25th elk, turns out. I should also point out my neighbor is 26, grew up out here, married and brand-new daughter. One of those guys with the respect for the animal I find so amazing. Great night; I got a little steak to take home to try to cook this evening. The rest goes in his freezer Monday. I predict one hell of a great BBQ season. :D

23. but what KIND of wine did you select?
i buy buffalo on line sometimes -- farm raised but very, very good.

i can't wait for it to become more widely available.

i've had venison, elk, and moose.

i much prefer elk and moose.
