Does anyone know how I can disable my website without erasing it?
I just want to completely disable my website from being viewed by anyone and then eventually put it back up. It was really just something I would update a couple times a year if I was sick or bored while I was in college It's kind of rude, politically motivated, some bad language, makes fun of just about everyone, and doing a search of my name and my school will bring you right to it. I really don't have time to make it less offensive right now but I don't want anyone I've been interviewing with to just do a search of my name and my school and be able to find it.

2. I wanted to say that!!! But I will say this
:pout: :stomp: : kick: :holler:

Do NOT rename it to "index.htm" or "default.htm" or "default.html".

Rename it to something boring like "index-old.html" or "old-index.html" or "index-07-31-03.htm" or "fred.html" though that'll be confusing...

3. And then change it back one day?
Another thing, my name is in the address - that's how it came free with the school. Is there a way of taking my name out of the address in one place that would change it everywhere on the site?

6. not sure I understand your question but...
if you mean your address is like

wwww.somedamncollege.edu/joejanedoe

and you want to change the joejanedoe part, you'd have to talk to the network administrator to change the directory name where you material is stored.

13. Change the File Name AND make a new index page
ie, just put in a blank page - no text, nothing. have that page as your index.html or whatever.

depending on your ISP, having no index page may leave you with an open directory where anyone can look into your now unprotected files.

9. Who hosts you server
There are access control type files that the Web server uses to decide who gets access to what. They determine when, for example, you have to log in to see a page. If you have control over this, just deny public Web users rights to your pages.

In Apache I think the file name is ".htaccess"

Just changin index.html will keep casual visitors out, but will not stop Google from indexing your site.

4. Problem is
with just renaming the index.html file is that if he has other pages that has his name on them with bad language, etc. then Google could find those as well. You can either transfer the files off to your computer and put on a new index.htm file, or if it's on a UNIX system, and you have access to it, you can chmod the files so that no one has access to read them.

17. are your html files in your home directory on the college server...
...or (more likely) in another directory called something like public_html? If the former, just make a directory that is NOT world readable and move all your html files into it-- your website instantly goes away, as does anyone else's access to even just look at those files (except the sysadmin, of course). If your html files are already in a separate subdirectory (they should be) just change the permissions on the subdirectory. Make them USER readable and writeable ONLY, and most particularly NOT world readable. I'm presuming that your university runs some flavor of *nix on their servers, so log in and type "man chmod" at the command prompt if you don't know how to change access permissions. You might be directed to "info chmod" if the server runs a GNU system.

Assuming your web page files are in a subdirectory called public_html, typing:

chmod 700 public_html

at the command prompt should do the trick. When you're ready to go back, enter

chmod 755 public_html

to make the subdirectory open to all again.

19. If your page is showing up in Google...
don 't forget Google's cache. If your page doesn't show up when people click on it, they may just have a look at the cache and see everything you didn't want them to see.

Perhaps it would be a better plan to build a simple page that looks like it was the original, but without the bad stuff. That way you might be able to discourage people from looking at Google's cache. However, some people, like me, would check out the cached version anyway just in case something like this had happened.

Basically, for a period of time determined by how long it takes Google to update the cached version of your page, you will not be able to get rid of it completely, and determined 'dirt diggers' will be able to see what you wrote with very little effort, even if you delete the entire site.
