A guy at work gave me a shoulder rub, yesterday, and....
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 04:30 PM by KC2
...I can hardly turn my neck today! Now, I have a pain in the middle of my back...just between my two shoulder blades. Do you think he damaged a nerve? I mean, it felt good, yesterday...especially right when he was giving me a massage...but today I am so sore.

Has this ever happened to anybody else?

Edit: spelling

1. That's not how I'd do it

...on any neck rubs. I've had two Advil gel caps and I didn't get much, if any, relief. :-(

2. Maybe.
He might have pinched a nerve. OTOH you might have pinched it inadvertantly when you slept.

7. Naw...this is an older guy..we go way back...
...I only mentioned that it was a guy because sometimes guys give such rough shoulder rubs. People give each other shoulder rubs, a lot, where I work....it's pretty high stress....and it's usually welcomed.

8. must be laid back where you work
most people would get a decent cash settlement on the basis of activity like that.

11. I Lay On A Massage Table Once
with a registered massage therapist

when she finished, she said you can get up now and left the room.

It took me a long time to get up and when I did I could hardly walk.

I don't know if you pinched a nerve, or what is wrong. Maybe it had nothing to do with his massage. It could be that you already had pain there.

18. I Sometimes Wish I Had Some
But i rarely hurt like that anymore

a good load of Ibuprofen and then some tylenol is a good pain remedy, or a muscle relaxer

but don't load up on all of the above, we don't want to see you posting in gibberish!

19. actually massage -- even ones that aren't good -- can uncover
problems that are going to erupt.

it would be my guess that this problem was coming at you anyway.

but i've been to masseuses before -- and for two days after -- i couldn't move i was so sore.

they weren't rough -- and it felt ok -- but my body just reacted to problems that were there and became released.

..qualifies as pretty bad pain...and a good time to use my emergency supply.

23. i've had your same problem.
mine stemmed from degenerating vertabrae c-5,6 and 7.
the three right at the base of the neck.

i had to endure an mri{shudder} -- it took time for the disk that was pressing against the nerve to retract and the inflammation to go away.

i HOPE that's not what is happening to you.

take care of your self and be ok.

24. Have you tried
a nice soak in a tub of hot water? That can help. Even our massage therapist at work tells all of her clients they need to do that after she works on them or they are going to be nasty sore for awhile.

25. Quite possible you had a deep muscle spasm response
and that muscle is swollen and pressing on a nerve.

Ever use a muscle relaxant? That may help.

Also, might try a warm tub bath (not too hot as that can cause more swelling), and after soaking for about 10 minutes, sit up, draw knees to chest and wrap arms around knees to open up the back and spread the muscles between the shoulder blades gently, and slowly lower head down. Stretch this way slowly and release slowly. Breathe in deeply through nose before the stretch, and breathe out slowly through mouth as you stretch. Do at least five of these stretches, and not more than ten. Don't go back to lying in the tub after stretching as it can cause the muscle to retreat and knot up again.
(dancing ballet/jazz for 35 years have learned many ways to release those deep muscle aches)

No matter what, hope you lose the pain quickly and feel better. :pals:
