It is getting really blah yucky here.

It is drizzling, temperature has dropped from 60 F earlier this a.m. to the 30's now and dropping more tonight.

We are expecting freezing drizzle, sleet, and colder temps.

I don't think we will get it as bad as Oklahoma and other places are. (Western Arkansas is where I'm at)

I know I've seen it in other orchards, running sprinklers on the trees when it gets down to freezing because it protects the tree and crops. I think the blanket is the deal

it was a nice day, warmish but cloudy but it's supposed to drop near freezing tonight with icy rain and sleet tomorrow and not warm up until Wednesday again

I think I'll finally light the furnance pilot light tomorrow. if it's only a day of clouds the sun will warm the house enough for our econoheaters to handle it, but with 3-4 days of clouds any barely breaking 33 in the day and the teens at night I think it's time for some forced air heat

windows that whistle in the wind (painter's tape is my friend when the wind blows LOL) they work great. but do figure they will be good for a 100sf per heater

we heat about 800 sf with 7 of them and they keep it above 65degrees even with snow on the ground outside. we figured out if we run them all 24/7 it costs us about $40 a month which is a lot cheaper than running the propane furnance

My furnace runs on heating oil. (over $350/fill) I'm getting another 150 gallons next week (I got 150 gallons in early December. We haven't had much winter to speak of, but the house is exposed to the wind in the winter and there's no heat worth speaking of going to the second floor. I love this old farmhouse, but if I owned it, the ductwork would be changed - dramatically.

Two in the living room (it's big), one in my room and one for Lelapin's room. Then the rest can be handled with a radiator-style heater I have and a forced air space heater.

We were lucky and got our power back in 3 days. Cold 3 days. Son was 6 months old and I was most worried about him but he was fine!

Three surrounding neighborhoods lost power, but we were very lucky and did not.

my across the street neighbors lost power for 3 weeks, but we only lost it for 3 days. People were running extension cords from their houses to people who didn't have power.

It's probably in the mid 60's right now and supposed to get up to 75 tomorrow...it's just not right. Granted I am in South Carolina but back home it is still about 50 degrees. Some areas slightly lower or higher. It is amazinly cold here and not normal. The air is so dry my hair is flat and someone at work asked me if I'd changed my hair style. But, it's not raining and while it's good for us we had a pretty lously flood last year and I prefer the sun. I can't even see my breath it's so dry. We brought in our flesh eating plants and all the bugs are gone from inside the house.

not that I'm an expert or anything, but isn't it usually pretty humid there? I mean I know the ocean breeze blows a lot of humidity out and it is not a humid as the east coast usually, but 21 degrees is really cold.

I know I have a roof 3 years old and it's guaranteed for some period of time. You also might have had some wind or other damage that caused it to leak. Worth checking out to see if you can file it on your insurance or something.

I fled NC to a more, um, HAPPY place. And I've never left. It is a blast to live down here. Same problems as anywhere else of course, but the sun is usually out and shining, the sea is warm...and hey,you never know what the tide will bring in.

People do it everyday. Jobs are plentiful, but the cost of living is high. However, MOST of the pay reflects that.

There are plenty of straight people down here, lol, and they are accepted:7 . No seriously, it is really a live and let live sort of place. They actually say it's a great place for straight guys, because there are more women than straight men...kind of a joke here. Please, no offense intended to anyone.

The hurricanes are a bummer. I lost my car in Georges in 98. I lost everything I owned (except my truck, parked on high ground) in Wilma last year. It was a bitch of a year. But the Keys are a close knit community and we all pulled together. No looting here. Everyone looks out for everyone else.

Another funny story. Right after Wilma, my roomie and I were sitting in our yard, all our belongings (couch, beds, electronics) drenched and on the street with everyone else's. Basically in shock. Of course, we had the National Guard, Red Cross, and Salvation Army all helping. But what was really cool was that so many Keys residents who also lost everything, but still had their vehicles...cruising around with water and ice. A woman I hadn't seen in years, Michelle, pulled up and asked if we need ice. Of course we did, no power and even if we had power, the refigerator was drowned. So she gives us the ice and we talk about our experiences during the storm. So she's leaving and says...if you need anything else let me know. Jokingly. I said, "well hell, we could use some beer!" Michelle walks to the back of her jeep and pulls out a twelve pack of Mich Ultra. Lemme tell you...that is the Keys. Right there.

But meantime, I have lived here 20 years and hey, it's all relative. There're diasters everywhere. And most years we don't have that happen.

I love it here. Nowhere else like it. Eventually I'll probably end up back in NC, but they will have to pry my sunburned fingers off this rock first.

For me, I think the ocean does it. Of course, you are technically in the gulf, but semantics, right?

Water does it for me.

you can see the gulf on one side and the ocean on the other. Duval Street (main drag in KW) runs from the Gulf to the ocean. Common way of referring to where you live is either "bayside" or "oceanside". I'm on the oceanside, but can walk across the street to the Gulf. These are small islands. Very small. It is why we were better off than the Gulf coast in a surge. Yeah, the water comes up, but it goes away pretty quick. Up and over.

When I go out in my kayak in the ocean, I can just cross under the bridge and am in the Gulf. Kind of a meaningless distinction here. We're just rocks really.

I love NC, but this has always felt like home to me. Form the first time I visited in college. I moved down here without knowing a soul. Just packed my truck and left. Never looked back.

I don't think of Arkansas as home. I do think of where my son is as being "home".

It's drizzly and crappy here, but I decided to go down to the marina anyway. By sheer good fortune, the weather improved, only briefly, and I managed to spend a couple of hours sailing this afternoon.

I remember driving I-40 to Albequerque in an ice/snow storm, that at one point had about an inch and a half of ice on the car, and cars and trucks in the ditches everywhere. We were stupid enough, drunk enough, or something to keep going. This was many many moons ago. I don't know how we made it but it took twice as long as it should have to do it.

We usually don't get as cold as Dallas or even Austin, I think it is the Gulf Coast that is protecting us from the worst of the weather.

I live in the Arkansas river valley and we are always 10 degrees or so warmer than 45 miles north of here. They are just a little higher and the lay of the land and the river seem to provide a barrier.

I've driven up the Interstate from Ft. Smith to Fayetteville and there is a tunnel between here and there and on one side there was no snow, and on the other side there was snow. The tunnel isn't more than maybe 300 feet long.

It's about 1 degree above zero. But, it's really OK. I mean, I was painting my house on Thanksgiving weekend. We've had, maybe, 3 inches of snow. We hit 40+ degrees this week. People are driving their vehicles through the ice (of course, that's a thinning of the herd sort of thing).

nostril hairs freezing is an interesting feeling. Here in Northeastern Minnesota, we are finally at normal temps. God, I love the cold.

There isn't much outdoor fun to be had during a winter without winter sports.

And working outside has been pleasurable...What's up with that? At least we've had hockey outside up here in Duluth for a couple months, as it's been below freezing up the hill where I live, for a while now. But we're finally getting normal temps.

my cousins live in Minneapolis and when I remember being there it was wayyy below zero.

we went skiing at Afton Alps and I froze my toes off. You were colder standing in the lift line and spent more time there and on the lift than you ever did on the slope.

A S.F. friend of mine, who was originally from Texas, visited me one winter. She had done some mountain climbing in Tibet, so she was pretty certain that she was ready for MN cold. And she was sure she had the proper clothing, too. Let's just say that her polar fleece jacket proved to be "inadequate." And when I took her out to play on the ice on Lake Harriet, she was absolutely terrified! She just couldn't conceive of the idea of a thoroughly frozen lake.

Probably wouldn't be much of an issue anymore, though. If you visit again, it could be warmer than where you live!
