Mom is getting harrassed because of my gay brother
Off and on for the past few years my mother has gotten disturbing phone calls from people who call her to tell her that my brother is "sick"...and these same deranged people call at the oddest hours which isn't nice to do to an elderly lady...

My mom knows my brother is gay and she is on great terms with his partner of over six years or so... but she doesn't like the phone calls and avoided telling my brother about it for a while...but this weekend was the last straw so she told him and now he is freaking out and asking her to get her phone monitored...

I tend to agree with my brother but mom is not so keen since she hates to be a bother...

Has anyone else had this problem???

11. Also keep a log of the date/time/message
Also screen the calls with a machine.

They leave a message on the machine they will incriminate themselves legally. Why legally? Because they in effect give permission to tape their messages when they leave it.

There should be a way to call the phone company up and they will id the individual and let the police know who it is even though they won't tell you.

But the caller id would be the best way unless they use the *67 method to block the display of their name and phone number.

4. Seriously, get caller ID!
Find out who these people are and report them immediately! No one should have to put up with that.

5. no..
get a phone that brings up the number of who called. if she can change number or get an unlisted one ,do it. or tell the phone company..it`s her phone, for her use, and not for someone to harrass her.

6. she called the phone company but they weren't much help
which isn't a surprise to me...
she has had the number for so long that changing it would be a problem...so I think caller id is her only option right now...she wanted to do that *69 thing but I told her that still doesn't give her the number of the idiot doing that...

9. in our area it is now *56 or something like that... and she didn't

get the number...and then when she called the phone company they told her that they couldn't give her the number...which made her feel pretty defeated...

since I have caller id i don't use the feature so I am not sure if it does give you the number...I thought it just autodialed the person back...which still wouldn't help her out...and I prefer that she not confront them but leave it to the police.

10. Too bad your mom has to live through these
calls from idiotic people! I am gay, but never got harrassed, probably because I am female. The ditto-head men feel more "insecure" about gay men. I would ask your brother to take a part in helping his mom. She may justify HIM purchasing her specialized equipment for her safety. Good luck.

12. get anon call reject
My phone company SBC (formerly Southwestern Bell) has a nifty feature we used at a campaign I worked on a few years ago.

It comes with Caller ID and it is called Anonymous Call Reject.

If somebody calls you using *69 or whatever, they get a friendly message telling them the party they call does not accept calls from anonymous numbers, please call back etc...

13. WTF?
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 11:11 PM by BareKnuckledLiberal
You're all telling this person to try to figure out who is calling?

You think a tech fix will solve the problem of hate harassment?

That's just nuts! The idiot probably knows to call from a phone booth. We like to think of rednecks as stupid, but a lot of them think they are so clever that no one can catch them.

Call the cops. This is a hate crime. If she reports it, and if the local gendarmerie is dragging its ass, the Federales can come in.

Sure, most phone idiots are harmless. Even so, it's the lack of reporting of hate crimes that allows it to slip under the radar.

16. I completely totally agree
Who's to say it will stop with just phone calls. This person or person needs to have some screws put on him. Don't let it escalate to something else. People get bold when they get away with the small stuff.

Agree. Call the cops. If they don't do anything, call the County, then call the State, then call the Feds.
