Picture yourself there, and examine the thoughts you might have
You are sitting on the front porch on a Sunday morning after arriving home from church.

The olive drab sedan pulls up and slowly comes to a halt in the street in front of your house.

A decorated officer and a chaplin climb out of the vehicle, while the driver remains inside.

They look toward your house number, checking against the folder in their hands for validity.

4. That scene in "Saving Pvt. Ryan" stands out...
for so many reasons.

My G'mother had told me that she often waited for the Western Union messenger or someone from the Army to show up and give her the bad news. As my dad was an only child, he didn't even have to go, but it was his duty, and he performed it well.

Obviously, since my ugly mug is here, the WU guy never showed up. But she was called to several of her friends homes to help console those who had lost a son.

5. Yes, they are still doing that.
And not every dead soldier is the child of a Republican, so the comment "I guess some repug just lost their kid" is truly offensive. Each and every dead soldier is someone's loved child, perhaps a father, mother, sister, brother, also. They were a living human being who had their life snuffed out needlessly, just as every single dead Iraqi was a father, mother, child, and so on who died for no good reason.
