I didn't take them in before the cold snap. Depressing, really, since they were so promising. The cold actually helped out the tomatoes, inspiring them to turn a little red so I could pick them.

Next year, in my 8 by 12 patio, it's corn, tomatoes, onions, and maybe strawberries in pots by the front porch.

I don't really know about the zones, just that Vegas is apparently a peninsula on the map of zones.

I bought the plants, on discount from Lowe's, as seedlings. It was a gamble that they'd make it long enough anyway, and I knew it before I took that bet. The tomatoes and peppers did very well at first, but even though it got colder, the days got shorter, and that had an effect. Flowers, like roses, don't really care and often bloom year-round here, but apparently vegetables know the difference. Plus we've had freakishly cold weather recently (ice and snow aren't uncommon, but the ice in the shady spots has been here for three days -- a sign of the Apocalypse?).

In another 4-6 weeks I can start planting again, though, and I've already made plans to start a window garden of herbs (garlic's happy so far), moving the houseplants to less sunny spots.

What do you know about winter vegetables? I saw the tail end of a PBS show on the subject, and all my sieve of a brain remembers is that the Chinese grow kale year round, and that kale actually likes the snow :). And do you know what the root depth of corn usually is? In my townhouse I have a a little open ground, but would like to know if pots are feasible?

Once I approached him in Borders and asked for a handshake "so my friends and family will love me even more than they do already." He shook my hand very graciously and then did some sort of elbow-to-elbow, slap your palms and nod your head kind of secret handshake and I lost him.
