Is TV ever broadcast on channels 3 and 4 in the same market?
The reason I ask is because I hooked up a VCR (remember those?) recently to an older, single, coax only input. Most of you will recall that VCRs have switches on the back where you choose either 3 or 4, then set the TV tuner to the same.

In my experience, 3 and 4 were never broadcast in the same area, and this was reason, I figure, that VCRs worked that-a-way.

But is this in fact true?

And my ultimate question: If so, why couldn't 3 and 4 be broadcast in the same area? Why, why, why? Other neighboring channels don't observe this rule (i.e., 4 and 5 are broadcast here.)

Please, make sense of it all for your humble, uninformed DU budster, darkstar.

TIA

2. 4 and 5 aren't adjacent; neither are 6 and 7
2, 3 and 4 go up to 72 MHz; 5 and 6 from 76-88 MHZ (which is why you can pick up Ch. 6 audio at the low end of your FM dial); then 7-13 pick up somewhere farther up the spectrum. UHF 14-69 (formerly 83) are even further up, obviously.

I'm only kind of following you. Not yr fault, I'm sure.

I think I got the adjaceny issue. There is a freq gap on the underlying assignments for the numbered "stations." This means 5 and six will never be in the same market? Nor any adjacent numbers from 7-13, i.e. 7/8, 8/9, 9/10 and so on? Am I close?

BTW, I've wanted to say hi to you before re: a south LA connection. Always shied away however, I guess, b/c it wasn't my thread, PM out of the blue seemed inappropriate, etc. Anyhow...I lived in Lafayette and worked in BR until recently. I worked on Breaux Act stuff, Hwy 17 to Port Fourchon elevation, Davis Pond and silt pumping projects, etc. I don't know what else to say but that I'll never be the same and that as a transplant to your area, how sorry I am for the good people of Louisiana. I quit my job out of grief, I guess, when Federal excuses went from "the risk doesn't match the cost" to "it's just going to happen again, so why fix it?" in a matter of months.

I hope you don't feel blindsided by this response to your elucidating response.

Nice to say hi, finally. Take care....

Edit:
I checked yr profile after I wrote this. I may have you confused w/ someone else who has/had the fleur di lis avatar. But I'll let my post stand. It was cathartic and I don't think I talk about it enough, even to myself. Thanks again, friend.

5. You've got the adjacency issue. Guess what I just got?
A few strings of beads and a hangover; I happened to be in N.O. on Saints game day, due to a scheduling snafu! It was my first trip back since I left the city in '91; although I had lived there only two years, the events of 2005 reminded me that there really is no such thing as an "ex-New Orleanian", or "ex-Louisianian", for that matter. Hence, the Saints/fleur-de-lis avatar, the N.O. city flag not being available.

I also got some documents from a neighborhood planning meeting. Like many visitors these days, I combined the (intense) pleasure with some serious business. I have been feeding ideas by email to an emerging neighborhood group in the Mid-City area for about a year now. I finally got to meet them, as well as some of the local bloggers I've been following.

Signing off from Honolulu, where we have VHF Chs. 2, 4, 5, 9, 11 and 13, (5 was added fairly recently; it had been reserved in HI and AK for uses other than TV, but that's another story...)

4. According to this TV station

The lower frequencies are more susceptible to inteference.
