Anybody ever make a new top for a table?

I have a coffee table w/ a wooden top that has split in a few places. I was thinking that it might be possible to make (or have made, rather) a top that just fits on top of the current top of the table, and instead of staining it (I doubt I'd ever match the stain on the legs, and I really don't want to refinish the whole thing) I'd paint and poly the new top.

Good idea? Bad idea? Is there some sort of material that would be best for this type of thing?

1. Never done that specifically

but have worked with wood a lot. It isn't that hard of a project (if you have the tools and some skill) and can't imagine it would be hard to hire out unless you are looking for top-end wood. I've seen tables where that was done and they are just great.

3. It could be cool

to cover it with thick felt and then a glass top. The glass can be cut to the dims you need at a hardware store. You could also cover the existing top with a sheet of nice plywood cut to size and stained, or, just go for a tablecloth. By the time you make a new tabletop and all the cost/time, it's probably best to be buying a new table.

if the top isn't starting to separate, I would get the glass cut to size, paint a funky colorful design on top, or make a collage out of with some things you might have laying around like:
photos
dried flowers
skeletonized leaves
feathers
decorator fabric
greeting cards
kids drawings
or even do some decoupage on it

cover it with the glass and presto! Work of Art.

On edit:
Or how about buying some millwork trim and nailing it around the edge of cracked tabletop to form a lip and then tiling it?

5. Great ideas!

I did that with a table of mine...I have a lot of paper mementos under the glass. Ticket stubs, fliers and postcards, etc. It looks really good.

7. Oh yeah! We took an old beat up nightstand..

we got at an auction for $2 and let my daughter go hog wild. She painted it neon green and then decoupaged all her little momentos to the top. We got a piece of glass for the top and it turned out fabulous. It's easily her favorite thing in her room.

On edit: And with all the scrapbooking stuff that is available now you could make a really creative piece!
