Leaving the (gas) stove on and leaving the house...
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 02:01 PM by npincus
I don't normally do it, but forgot to cook dinner (brisket) and have to leave the house shortly for a few hours.

Does anyone do this? Am I being overly cautious, or is it a bad idea? I cook it on a low temp for 2 1/2 hours...

on edit: spoke to hubby- his response: "No way."

I'm mad at myself for forgetting. I'll still cook it, but we'll just eat late. Also, for brisket, after cooking, I leave it in the oven for another hour or more, which makes it ex-tra soft and yum-yum.

1. what a
coinkdink

I woke up this morning and realized I'd left my burner on. Probably ruined my pan. Thank God I don't have a parakeet.

5. I passed out one night with water boiling in teflon..
When I woke up the pot had turned blue.. For about four weeks my breathing was very labored. I went to the ER three times during that month. I would suddenly find myself not being able to take in air.

4. Me either.
In the case of brisket, I'd just cook it at a higher temperature for less time later in the day.

3. I wouldn't do it.
If you had a crock pot, that would be a different story.

6. That's what I was going to suggest, but brisket would take a long time
in a crockpot.

7. I would not leave a gas range on unattended, except -
possibly for a VERY short time (to zip down the block and pick up my daughter at school, for example) - certainly not for hours.

11. When I was heavy in macrobiotic cooking, I'd leave whole oats on the burner all night.

12. my brisket recipe:
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 05:33 PM by npincus
...a token of appreciation for your wise counsel, here's my unbelieveably easy recipe (it's tasty, too):

1 brisket-- preferably not over-trimmed, with fat

1 pouch Lipton brand (or generic) onion soup (**box contains 2 pouches)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put brisket, fat side up, on a large piece of heavy duty aluminim foil. Empty onion soup ouch on brisket and spread around. Close aluminum foil around the brisket and try to close completely (brisket will steam during cooking and a lot of soup gravy will form inside). Put in oven, keep in for 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Shut off oven and leave inside for another hour or two.

Taa-daa! Any idiot can make this! It's even better if you eat it the next day. Or freeze it and just reheat another day. Also, much easier to slice when cool. Yum-yum. It has a lot of juice (gravy). We serve it in a big dish immersed in the gravy... yum yum.

I put mine in the oven around 30 minutres ago... great served w/rice (white, brown, wild, etc.)

14. I don't even let my dryer run when I'm away . . . better safe than
burning down your house to save a few hours.

Yah know?

16. Yeah, if I'm cooking something that takes a long time
BBQ Ribs or Baked Beans, sometimes those can cook for 8 hours or more.

It's probably not a good idea to leave, but if I need to go out for a while ...
