A small prejudice: Baseball caps worn backwards.
If the person sporting such front-to-back headgear is not a baseball catcher actively engaged, at the moment, in playing that position (especially if that non baseball playing person is over the age of 30) I just expect them to be not too bright.

I am rarely disappointed.

Disclaimer:
Yes, I am a geezer.
I have worn a baseball cap backwards, but only when fishing with the sun to my back, so as to avoid a blistered neck*.

*AKA: 'Red Neck'

OK, flame away.

1. No flames from me
Actually, I would go further and say that I think the baseball cap look is a rotten one anyway. I like hats but I think baseball caps look pretty foolish on most everybody except someone who is actively playing baseball.

And it irritates the crap out of me how many people I see wearing them in restaurants! Maybe I'm old fashioned but I was taught you take your hat off indoors.

69. Yarmulkes and other headgear

worn in observance of one's faith would
definitely be an exception.

I guess it's a generational thing- I'm an oldie
and was raised that it is polite to remove one's
hat when you come indoors.

Baseball caps, generally, are not worn for religious reasons.
Unless you're a NASCAR fan, and that's whole different religious faction.

13. It was the way the "cool" kids wore their caps when I was in high school
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 06:27 PM by last_texas_dem
Therefore, I generally tried (and try) to avoid it, as pretty much anything that was considered cool by the dumbasses I went to high school with is probably better forgotten. I do make exceptions for some times during which I'm growing my hair out and it's in that awkward stage (wearing caps backwards tends to keep hair out of your face a little better than wearing them the correct way) and with some caps that are too "tall" on top and make me look like I'm wearing a pot on my head if I wear them forwards. (My ears must be a little higher on my head than on most people's 'cause it's hard to find a cap that doesn't look kinda goofy on me. Then again, maybe caps just make a lot of people look goofy, 'cause I have heard several people with the same complaint!)

EDITED on account of excessive verbosity!

21. I never.
Did I say how I thought anyone should orient their headgear?
Never!
Did I DICTATE how one should adorn oneself in the public eye?
Did I even HINT that "This is how you should wear a cap."?
Show me where.

I merely expressed my sole, personal expectations of those who choose to wear their caps backwards.
By all means, wear it wrong-side-out and upside-down, if that is fond your desire.

Indeed, wear it upon your shoulder, elbow, or knee, if that pleases you.
Far be it from me to dictate the proper habiliment of headcoverings or any other haberdashery.
I will leave that to the Republicans.

30. Look at it this way:
I think that showing one's underpants (whether a woman's "whale-tail" or some guy's boxers when his pants are down near his knees) is crass and stupid. Saying that I think it looks stupid does not mean that I want to tell them how to dress. It DOES mean that I don't have a problem stating that they look like idiots.

16. On geezers and baseball caps:
When you get to be a geezer, especially if you're WWII vintage, you have to wear a baseball cap with the insignia of your unit or branch of service.
And you wear it with the bill forward, BUT with the entire cap 'cocked' to one side of your head.
The 'cock' (no, this is NOT a sex thread) traditionally goes toward the same side you part(ed) your hair.
Or used to part your hair.
When you had hair.
It's the law.
You could look it up.

If he wears it sideways he is definitely not ready for the opposite sex. He wants the approval of his buddies more than anything else.

63. My husband wears them that way to keep his hair off his face.
He had long hair (he just cut it for locks of love & to make it easier at his new job). Now he's so used to wearing the cap that way that he does it automatically. It fits snugly and is cheap; unlike some other hats that would do the same thing and cost more.

He's one of the smartest people I've ever known; btw.

68. "Worn backwards to keep hair out of eyes." A canard.
Look, people...a baseball cap is pretty much symmetrical.
The circumference is ROUND.
It's not lower in the back, nor in the front.
How does wearing it backward keep hair out of your eyes any better than wearing it bill-to-the-front?
Sorry.
That doesn't work.

71. Catchers don't do the backward-cap thing much anymore
The headgear they wear now kinda prohibits it.

A few still wear a traditional mask with a batting helmet, though.

73. Wow. Starwars. Haven't been to a game in many years.
I should have known that GREAT STRIDES have been made in baseball protective headgear.
Somehow I just can't see Yogi Berra in one of those.

74. Thanks guys. This has been a fun thread.
A few times we skated very closely to the edge, but managed to pull back and maintain a semblance of decorum and good humor.
I had some good laughs, and hope you did too.
Time for dinner, so good night till later.
And thanks for all the chuckles.
