3. Awesome, indeed.
Every now and then, something good happens on TV here in the US. This is the latest example.

5. I haven't seen it
The title is kinda tempting, though. Is it like a real-people version of "Daria" or...

33. It's part soap opera, part social commentary, and part comedy.
Not enough comedy in my opinion though. The pilot episode was a gem - the best hour of TV produced in 2006, in my opinion. Since then it sort of drifted - the Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes were kind of run-of-the-mill. But the last 2 episodes these past 2 weeks have been gripping - they found their dramatic mojo again, but it's still not as funny as it could be. The script is witty and the show is very fast-paced - each scene is just as long as it needs to be and then they cut to something else. There are a lot of good lines sprinkled throughout, but not really any laugh out loud moments. Still, I look forward to each episode.

8. Except she's not ugly...
Why do I get the feeling that at some point in this show, they're going to get rid of the braces and the weird padding that makes her look awkward, and turn her into just another babe?

12. they've already revealed her as a beautiful person
so even though they will predictably make her pretty- she still won't be tall and blonde...

13. It's fine that they did that, but why not with an actress
that doesn't need phony braces and weird prosthetics to doctor her appearance? How about finding an actress who is naturally what society recognizes as "ugly"?

26. I made the same comment about the casting of Betty.
Whenever they have a character who is supposed to be 'ugly,' they always cast someone who is actually quite pretty, then they mess up her hair, put big glasses on her, maybe braces, frumpy clothes, etc. It's bad enought you don't see women who aren't considered pretty by standard definition being cast in TV shows or movies; one would think they could at least get cast for these types of roles. But nooooooooooooo. Only beautiful women allowed in Hollywood. :eyes:

32. Supposedly in the original "Betty La Fea" series in Colombia, the actress really was ugly.
I haven't seen a picture, just read that on some of the message boards.

35. the truth is, most women are neither
Actresses get a lot of help, at least at putting on a face. Most ordinary women can be made up to look a lot better. Very few get out of bed looking like Angelina Jolie.

18. I think she's great.

And I love the show.

Her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes was fantastic,
driving home the point that many " not pretty by Hollywood's standards"
( whatever the hell that is!) girls now have someone who represents them.

But IRL, she is very pretty.
Inside, she's a gem.

Oh yeah, the point of replying--

I missed Thursday's show!!
What happened?

16. Alternet: ABC's not so ugly Betty
This article is excerpted from the article "Beautiful Betty" in the winter 2007 issue of Ms. magazine, available on newsstands now.

A colleague recently asked me to compare Betty Suárez, the leading character of ABC's new hit Ugly Betty, to Ally McBeal. "Well, they probably both have vaginas," I replied. Gender is about the only identity that Betty shares with previous and contemporary women television characters. How many working-class, Mexican American, clumsy, allegedly "ugly," intelligent women with an illegal-immigrant father have been portrayed on U.S. television? Until Betty's arrival, none.

In Ugly Betty, a first-generation, college-educated woman (played by America Ferrara of Real Women Have Curves and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants fame) lives with her father, sister and nephew in working-class and ethnically diverse Queens. Contrary to the Sex and the City troupe, Betty and her single-mother sister can't enjoy the wonders of New York City's nightlife, as they are the family's primary financial providers and have to worry about their father's health plan and the legal expenses related to his illegal status.

As an assistant for fashion magazine Mode, Betty has been labeled ugly, fat and classless, and suffers numerous humiliations from co-workers. But while Betty has apparently internalized the pain of being categorized as ugly, she does not seem concerned about her weight. As an intelligent and ambitious woman, Betty wants to succeed at her job, yet her distance from upper-crust culture has thus far been an obstacle at class- and image-conscious Mode.

The idea for Betty came from a Colombian telenovela (soap opera), Yo soy Betty la fea (I am Betty, the Ugly One), which narrated the story of a single, physically awkward, working-class, brilliant and hard-working woman in her late 20s who was employed as a secretary at high-fashion company EcoModa. Following the conventions of Latin American telenovelas, which typically portray the complexities of an almost impossible love between two people from different social classes, Betty fell in love with Armando, the company's president.

She deserved the Golden Globe and I hope she'll pick up the Emmy, too. Only in her early twenties, she should have a long and productive career.

24. Hollywood's idea of ugly leaves me scratching my head
Betty wears glasses, has braces and isn't a stick figure. She's actually a very attractive girl, IMO. They did the same thing with Janeane Garofalo in The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Janeane is in no way "a dog" no matter how you look at her. She's just shorter and less blonde than Uma Thurman.

25. Yes, I remember when Roger Ebert reviewed that movie. He said
he couldn't believe Janeane was presented as being or seeing herself as "a dog." He said he thought she was pretty. I was glad to hear him say that.

29. I love that show, and America Ferrera.
The show is just too funny. It's a great mix of over-the-top and real situations.

As to America Ferrera: she's not ugly, but that's the whole point of the show. She's not ugly, even though most people around her don't see past her 1970s clothing and braces. Perhaps they could have found an authentically "fugly" person, but I don't know that they could have found a better actress for the role. America Ferrera brings a lot of heart, and that's more important than fug.
